The competancy one you might have an issue on, but your beta sounds like she couldn't see past her bias.

Disclosure: Gwen grates my cheese too, and yet I wrote her as closely as I could to her onscreen portrayal.

Unfortunately many people don't assume their own biases, so they probably thought they were being helpful, if they're generally a good beta...but they might just be a bad beta.

If they get the characterization right on the rest of the characters - pointing out woobifying or wrong language useage or whatever, then the issue is unacknowledged bias. If they are good at SPaG, but poor on characterization, then you need to keep that in mind when weighing their value.

Also, you need to consider your bias. Was the situation one where Gwen would default to catty? Because often she did. She was also often thoughtless and cruel in the treatment of those closest to her, although weirdly, she would go miles for strangers. (Also without considering the consequences of her actions.

It's a shame, but a lot of people aren't good at being objective about their biases. Sounds like your beta is one of them. Maybe you're right to keep her as a beta for other fics, but... I dunno. Personally, I'd feel like if a person is unable to detach from their personal prejudices, their judgment is likely to be off in other areas as well.

Sounds like it might be a good idea to get different betas depending on the fic you're writing.

I mean, I will be the first to admit that I was not a Gwen fan, but I think it's important to recognize that perhaps the biased one is actually you. Because yeah, Gwen was often heartless/thoughtless and incompetent. You don't have to like a character to know how to keep them in character.

We can't know without more information who the biased one is, but I will say that there's a big difference between canon Gwen's incompetence and thoughtlessness and fanon Gwen's incompetence and thoughtlessness. You don't have to like a character to keep them in character, but when it comes to polarizing characters like Gwen, having a strong opinion of any kind can be detrimental.

Post a sample. Let fandom secrets determine who was off base.
