I'm in the Doctor Who fandom. Of course I'm overthinking it.

I get annoyed when anyone refuses to accept obvious flaws of a character, but I think sometimes people just like to squee. I can't speak for rabid Martha fangirls, though, as I'm really not active in Who fandom. Are they anything like the Rose fangirls?

Kind of. There are only a few that I know of on

lifeonmartha and honestly, I think they make the rest of us look bad. There are farrr less batshitters in Marthafen compared to the Rose fandom, partly because I think that Martha's fandom is much smaller, but the ones that there are still make me cringe a lot. It's hard enough being a fan of a character that is so hated, and it's difficult to stay dignified when some of them are like RTD HATES MARTHA, MARTHA IS GIVEN THE RAW END OF THE DEAL ALL THE TIME, MARTHA WAS ONLY GIVEN A BOYFRIEND BECAUSE THE WRITERS THINK THAT SHE CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT A MAN IN HER LIFE - HOW OFFENSIVE!!11!! Personally, I think Martha's characterisation is as realistic as can be in a show about a timetravelling alien, but that's just me. I like being able to discuss Rose and Martha as equals rather than OMG MARY SUE ROSE or MARTHA IS STUPID FOR LOVING TEN, it's just hard to find other people who appreciate the balance, and who don't disrepect you with regards your companion preference. This comment turned a bit ranty, sorry about that! I guess that's what fandom does to me.

Haha, I wondered what people would think about Martha and her "man." I did always feel that Martha and Donna were in Rose's shadow, and some comments RTD made about Rose convinced me she was his favorite, but I don't think he *hates* Martha. If he hated her, why on earth would he write her in as a main character? And I agree - I think her characterization was *very* realistic for Doctor Who. I remember being distinctly impressed while watching her last episode, because it was such a human thing to do. I don't think it's that she can't live without a man in her life, but it does show that she's officially moved on from the Doctor - or... as much as one can ever move on from someone like him. ;] I think people in fandom just like something to complain and be righteously indignant about.

I'm glad I'm not the only person who likes both Rose and Martha. There are things to like about both, dude. I just find myself reluctant to admit liking Rose, since people get so... OMG SHE WAS THE ONLY COMPANION THE DOCTOR REALLY CARED ABOUT. I do like Martha a bit more than Rose, so... that irritates me.

I know how it is, though, being embarrassed by the crazies. *cough*House/Wilson*cough.* You heard nothing. NOTHING. :D

Rose is RTD's favourite, and why not? I mean, most people have favourites. One of the writers on the Who books team blogs about Martha being his favourite and nobody is attacking him for not writing books about Rose. RTD is as entitled to have a favourite companion as we all are.

On the issue of Martha's boyfriend, I know a lot of people think that it's a copout having her tied to Earth but she's happy. What more could a Martha fan want than for her to be enjoying in her new life, happily engaged to Doctor Mc Hottiepants and loving her new job? The scene at the end of The Doctor's Daughter where she looks at her ring and trots into her house made me really happy, because even though she's not travelling permanently with the Doctor, she has the best of both worlds. He's there if she needs him or ever wants to chat, and she knows that. (Although that very scene created a post of enormous wankitude at aforementioned community)

I think that Martha is my favourite Who!Companion to date. I swing between her and Donna, but this doesn't mean I hate Rose, not by a long swing. I thought that she was brilliant in her 2 seasons, but it's ok to move on from her to liking other companions too. The Who fandom really is a giant ball of craziness - what with the companion wars and the classic vs Nu!Who stuff. It's really a wank-a-minute.

And OMG the House/Wilson crazies. House is one of those shows where anyone can get together and I'll ship them. I have no OTP, I just think everyone works so well together, which didn't really go in my favour when I tried to join a House/Cameron community and then a House/Wilson and a House/Cuddy one. But such is life.

Exactly! When I found out Martha was engaged, and had a life she enjoyed here on Earth, I was *happy* for her. If she was really getting "short-shafted" she would have just been forgotten about, not given a happy ending. Sillies. And wankitude? Whatever was there to wank about? Psh.

Well, I suppose it's hard, because people do get attached to characters, but you've got to go into the show knowing they're not going to be around forever. I was sad we only got one season with Nine, and I'm going to be heartbroken when Ten leaves, but hey, the Doctor regenerates. It's what happens. Companions come and go, too. And there's something to love about all of them. Plus... the episodes aren't going away, you can watch them multiple times. And isn't that what fanfiction is for? More stories we don't get to see? I hate to think what people will be like if the show ever ends again. Riots in the streets. And oh jeebus, don't get me started on old!Who/new!Who wank. x[ Can't we all just get along?
