This doesn't sound like a bad idea to me, particularly if combined with a qualifier about people who've 1) apologized and 2) seem to be making a good faith effort not to screw up again. But yeah, it's never going to go down well with the most strident percentage of fandom.

That's a shame. Does your friend read much fanfic or original published fic? I see this a lot with people who aren't widely read. It gives them a skewed outlook on what's "fresh" and "original". Of course, what you describe isn't really a big handicap in fandom, from most readers' perspectives.
