Question: are you fat?

(Anonymous) 2017-08-13 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you a dickhead?

It's blunt, but I don't find this an irrelevant question? I also wondered whether it's because OP has an issue with the terms fatso and pig because of the relation to weight, whether OP is sensitive to it because they are also overweight, or whether it's a derogatory pet name thing in the general sense they dislike

(Anonymous) 2017-08-13 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
er, derogatory pet name thing that mocks a physical feature, I mean.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-13 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
But even then, that's not actually what they asked

(Anonymous) 2017-08-13 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, please. OP already mentions in the secret that they're sensitive to body image issues. What could you learn from their answer to "are you fat?" that you don't already know? At best, it's nosy. At worst, it's looking for a reason to mock OP.

Not... necessarily? People can be uncomfortable with things like that without being fat, just like people can be offended by a racist joke without being the race the joke is directed at. Tbh, using the word "uncomfortable" is what made me wonder on my side, because I as a non-fat person would be "uncomfortable" with it but not "offended" by it.

I don't think it's irrelevant to ask whether OP is uncomfortable with it for the sake of other people, or offended by the use because they're part of a group it appears to be mocking. Especially when they question whether they are being "too sensitive to body image and issues"?

Like I could see myself writing this secret as a non-fat person saying this makes me uncomfortable because it sounds offensive to fat people, but not being a fat person, maybe I'm being too sensitive about body issues and being That SJW that's offended on their behalf, when everybody means the nicknames endearingly.

"Sensitive" isn't how I'd describe it when I'm uncomfortable around issues that don't affect me.

The result is pretty much exactly the same no matter what OP weighs. I still think it's just plain nosy, no matter how many times you insist the original anon was just asking a relevant question. There's an extremely low chance that someone in a discussion on the internet is going to ask questions about someone else's weight in good faith, and it's completely disingenuous to insist otherwise.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-13 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Something can be nosy and relevant at once, is all I was pointing out.

If someone was musing whether they're too sensitive about terms involving insert-race people, "are you insert-race yourself" is not out of the blue, and does in fact give the thought more and different context?

(Anonymous) 2017-08-13 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I might accept this if the original anon had asked if OP had body image issues. But that's not what they asked.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-13 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
There are lots of body image issues that aren't about weight though. Maybe it's just me, idk. When I read the secret it looks like something I might write about being sensitive to others' body image issues because I had some, but they weren't about weight. So like, am I just reading too far into this? Are people offended by it, or am I being too sensitive over here by myself? "Are you actually fat" would be a good question to ask to me there

I'm not denying the original anon was blunt to the point of rudeness, like. I'm just saying depending on the answer the context could be different and people jumping to be like "it can't possibly matter" isn't entirely right

(Anonymous) 2017-08-13 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
But it's clear what OP was talking about, regardless of whether OP personally was fat. So they weren't really asking in order to better understand what OP was saying. And even if you're just curious about how much OP weighs, it's wildly impolite and frankly dickheadish to phrase it like that, for Pete's sake.

You're going through a lot of contortions for someone whose post wasn't that complicated

I explained myself further in the post above, and I'm not defending the politeness of the question but I am saying it's relevant?

I did not get the impression that OP is overweight, I got the exact opposite impression because of the way they're not sure whether they have a right to be uncomfortable or not. You seem really sure OP is fat and that's weird to me tbh

(Anonymous) 2017-08-13 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I think all of us know the answer to that question.

Hint: it's YES.

Not necessarily, things can make you uncomfortable without targeting you or a group you're part of?

OP here

(Anonymous) 2017-08-14 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
No, but a survivor of anorexia, thanks for the charming question.

NAYRT, but I'm sorry. People are assholes.
