[Yuri!!! On Ice]

No, it's annoying. Most demeaning terms of endearment are.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-13 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I don't think you're being too sensitive, I think that's an entirely legitimate gripe.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-13 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Question: are you fat?

(Anonymous) 2017-08-13 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)

No, but a survivor of anorexia, thanks for the charming question.

I'm indifferent about the show and avoid the fandom so I didn't know they were doing this, but ugh.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-13 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never seen anyone in the fandom do this.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-14 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Same. And I'm really active in the fandom. Sounds like OP is just hanging around dicks. Find your normal fans and ignore the weirdos.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-13 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
No you're not too sensitive that's gross as fuck.

Honestly the only people who would find being upset with this "too sensitive" are just , like.. people who make these kinds of comments

(Anonymous) 2017-08-13 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
...I've never seen this? I mean, I'm not sure I'd call myself really deeply in the fandom, but I read a lot of fic and quite a few of the people I follow on Tumblr are fans, and I don't think I've seen anyone do this?
The closest I can think of is when people write Victor or Yurio calling Yuuri that in a mocking/affectionate way, but even then it's usually treated as 'this guy is being mean because he's emotionally stunted and doesn't know how to express affection in an open an healthy manner'. Oh, and I did see one picture that had chibi Victor, Yuuri, and Yuurio in kigurumi - respectively, a poodle, a piglet, and a tiger.
That's it. Maybe you just spend too much time with jerks.

4chan's pet name for the ship is "bald/fat" and "fat/bald" depending on who tops. I get it's tongue in cheek but it makes me sad, too. (and much more difficult to wank to porn of them..)

(Anonymous) 2017-08-13 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooooh, 4chan...well there's a bastion of basic human decency if ever there was one.

I notice Tumblr going the OTHER way, like insisting that Yuri is not at all fat or overweight even in episode 1. And they freak about body image issues and sort of, I think, project body images issues onto Yuri.

Like, there's a little cultural difference at play here. Not saying it's impossible that Yuri has body image issues (there's a good chance he does), but making fat jokes, especially endearingly, is a lot more normal in East Asia than it is in the US. Not saying that's okay, it's just how it is - no matter how skinny you are, there's always that auntie who points out that you've gained weight.

Plus, Yuri probably IS a little overweight in episode 1. Which is fine for everything except for being a competitive Olympian-level figure skater, where it just isn't possible to do those kinds of jumps and spins unless you're in absolutely incredible shape. Hell, you can even be in incredible shape and doing a quad is still nuts. So yeah, any coach of Yuri's WOULD have to encourage him to lose weight, end of, if he's going to have a shot at a medal.

I'm not in the fandom, but one of my mutuals brought a lot of chubby!Yuri art to my dash. There's definitely a subset that's all for the fat positivity there.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-13 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
It makes me uncomfortable too.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-13 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
More importantly, when is the Yuri on Ice movie coming out?! is there any season 2 confirmations yet?

(Anonymous) 2017-08-13 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
After the winter Olympics.

If there's a season 2, it wouldn't be announced before the movie.

I agree it's rude to call him Pig, but it is canon he called him that when he was getting him to lose weight. I don't think he'd still call him that when they are actually together though.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-14 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
Except that never happened. Victor called him little piglet twice (or trice if you count the drama). The only one who called him pig (even after he lost weight) was Yurio.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-14 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yurio calls him 'pig' and Victor has called him 'piglet' on some occasions, but barring how Yurio needs his mouth washed with soap (and tends to call Yuri Katsudon more when he's not in a bad mood), I do like how Victor calls him 'piglet' and Yuri's reaction is just a mild 'oh stop that'.

Yuri's weight only matters because it's harder for him to balance and perform on the ice but say he finally retires from figure skating, I don't think he'll care much about whether he has a big belly or not. And nor would Victor.

That said, I do think we need more body positivity especially in Asian countries where a normal weight is already 'fat'. Calling a chubby Yuri 'fatso' and 'pig' isn't helping.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-14 07:30 am (UTC)(link)
I just can't see a retired Yuri getting big belly-fat. The Japanese fat i.e. some softness there (kind of like Hiroko who isn't fat either), sure. But a big belly and three chins? No.

You're not too sensitive. It's really gross fatphobia and shaming language and it's wrong. That's why you feel uncomfortable.
