(Anonymous) 2017-08-15 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)And outside of effects, the storytelling and pacing is largely different. The old doctors and companions are fantastic but other then that I wouldn't say old who is necessarily an easy watch, especially if you are used to the newer series.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-16 12:28 am (UTC)(link)It's not a matter of how much imagination a person has. If a movie wants to skip effects, show a lot less of the flashy stuff, and leave me to fill in the blanks, I can do that just fine. What I can't do is ignore really horrible, awkward, fake looking effects.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-16 12:35 am (UTC)(link)I have a much easier time reading books or listening to radio shows and imagining a world then trying to contradict a world that is already in front of me on television. Bad effects can be distracting.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-16 12:08 am (UTC)(link)Terrance Dicks's prose adaptations were how I got into Doctor Who as a child, and honestly, much of the actual TV show was a disappointment.
Novels really are a better form for science fiction. TV is a good form for doing a crap job of it and playing it off as 'camp.'

* Of course, in some cases, the soundtrack's all that's left!

(Anonymous) 2017-08-16 12:59 am (UTC)(link)Personally, I really liked Leela, Romana, and Ace's episodes, though. And a great deal of the Tegan and Nyssa stuff. I'd like to one day see all of it.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-16 02:37 am (UTC)(link)I usually tell people that they should understand that Old Who is for small children that are halfway scared by foam rubber, or for grownups that think foam rubber is funny.
I fall into the latter category.

Bonus secret: I still think Daleks are stupid.
