That seems like an odd takeaway. Sounds ie you were ONLY interested in Harry Potter and not the rest of the magical word.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-16 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
...but it didn't end because WHAT HAPPENED BETWEEN ALBUS & GELLERT???

(Anonymous) 2017-08-16 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
They had terrible sex, and Gellert left before Albus woke up.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-16 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Heresy!

(Anonymous) 2017-08-16 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay - they had fantastic sex, Gellert had a big gay crisis, and left before Albus woke up.

You are redeemed.

I actually am more interested in these characters because it's such an expansion on the larger magical world. Plus, I quite liked Newt and his New York pals.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-16 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here OP! I've never felt the same fervent obsession with the HP universe that others have.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-16 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved everything about the Harry Potter series, including the setting and the characters. The expanded universe...not so much. Couldn't make it through Fantastic Beasts because it just didn't have the same feel.

I think if you went into Fantastic Beasts expecting it to be a Harry Potter movie you were setting yourself up for disappointment.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-16 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't. I just didn't expect to be so put off by the setting, and the colourisation. The whole aesthetic was all wrong for me and that's pretty much how I figured out exactly what it was about HP I loved so much. For many, it was the existence of magic. It was far more specific for me.

That's totally fair, but that's also what I meant by expecting FB to be an HP movie.

Sorry if I misinterpreted your comment. It just kinda sounded like you expected the whole expanded universe to have the same aesthetic

For me, it was the story of Harry, the humour, and the fun banter between Harry's friends. I love the books, but I have no desire to see Fantastic Beasts because it'd be missing most of what I liked.

I never really got into Harry Potter, but I loved this movie. The worldbuilding, magical creatures, and the main character were all really neat in my view. It was pretty much exactly what I wanted in a movie about magical creatures.

I love HP and I love FB, but they were very (intentionally) different.

I think Fantastic Beasts would have renewed my obsession with that world if it had had more appealing characters/casting choices. I mean, most of them are fine, but I don't care that much about what happens to them next, Colin Farrell got overwritten by an actor I feel done with, Katherine Waterston is bland, I'd have killed for someone else to play Credence...When you compare it to other things that could have been explored, somehow the whole premise doesn't grab me.

I feel like Colin Farrell should continue on with that role. All other issues aside, he's much easier on my eyes. The guy was GQ Wizard!

I really liked it, which surprised me. And all the references to stuff established in the main HP movies made me happy too.

I was a bit heartbroken when Kowalski and Queenie had to part, even though I figured she wouldn't stay away from him. I loved Kowalski's "don't I know you?" expression at the end.

It was so much better than any of the HP movies/storylines.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-17 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
I quite liked it because it was a bit different from the rest of HP.

HP never really grabbed me as fiercely as it did my friends and so many other people, so while I liked the books and movies fine, I always found it a bit alienating because everyone was so obsessed with it and I wasn't. I felt more on an even footing with FB because it wasn't dragging as big and bloated a mass of trivia, wank, shipping, flame-wars, and fannish in-jokes behind it as the main series.

Still not really that into it, though, but it was a darling movie.

Newt >>>>>>> Harry

Eh. She should never have taken it to America. It loses all charm once it's set in America.

I think I preferred FB but at least for me I was always more interested in the adult characters in the HP books, so FB fit that need I wanted to see adults running around doing magic.
