Clothes washing is also not a recent invention.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-24 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT People didn't wash their clothes back then as often as we do now. Laundry took a whole day to do and people mainly washed their undergarments, not their outer clothes, because the stuff they used for laundry back then was really hard on fabric. Outer clothes would get washed every now and then, but it was mainly the under clothes that got washed on laundry days.

You seem to be thinking of a very specific type of outer garment. It is not true that people didn't wash their normal clothes at all.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-24 08:25 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT

Anon also didn't say that the clothes didn't get washed "at all".

(Anonymous) 2017-08-24 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
You know the streets were full of horse shit from all the carriages, right? And they didn't have electric washing machines?

(Anonymous) 2017-08-24 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
...so?

You are suggesting people rolled around in shit? And that one needs an electric washing machine to have clean clothing?

(Anonymous) 2017-08-24 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
You really seem to be taking this personally, anon.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-24 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
sa - you're also not taking economic class into account here.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-24 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
I would've never thought that this thread about incorrect or exaggerated medieval hygiene stereotypes was personal until you literally just went and made it weird.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-25 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT, but you are being deliberately obtuse. When the streets are full of shit, all those carriages and wagons driving through it will splatter it on the passers-by.

And when washing clothes is extremely labor-intensive (as it was before the advent of washing machines), it tends to get done less often. Hence, stinkier clothing.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-24 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
You can't be this dense.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-24 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Oh please. Whining about the ~dirty medievals~ shows a vast misunderstanding of history and is factually incorrect. People cleaned themselves, they cleaned their clothes, they largely didn't spend their days rolling around in shit. Documentation and archaeology suggests that medieval people went to great length for hygiene, and to eliminate or mask bad smells.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-24 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Nobody is saying people never bathed back then.
Nobody is saying people never washed their clothes back then.
Nobody is saying they spent their days rolling around in shit.

Those are all really lame straw men arguments you made up, for some reason. Your own entertainment, I guess? It's a bit disingenuous to pretend like you care about historical facts.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-24 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
I have a history MA, so yeah, actually,
I am more interested in historical fact than you clearly are. Why you are so bent on insisting all the barbarian medievals had stinky dicks and consistently smelled like shit is beyond me.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-24 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
But if don't you know the true historical facts of my personal sexual history? What's that MA really worth.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-24 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Nobody said it was. I said "their clothes were a lot dirtier", which is true. Modern technology and detergents allow us to get our clothes a LOT cleaner than people in historical times, and we tend to wash our clothes far more frequently. The average person also has a much larger wardrobe and isn't necessarily forced to wear the same shirt or gown over and over between washings. Modern people also tend to live less active lifestyles, so our clothes don't get as dirty or sweaty throughout the day, either.

I'm honestly not sure if you're ignorant or trolling, so well done you?
