Ah, diabetes. The chronic illness it's cool for everyone to joke about or make light of.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-25 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Get that chip off your shoulder. If a person actually ate like a Hobbit, diabetes would be a pretty likely outcomes sooner or later.

in middle earth? where elves, orks, dwarves, ect exist? diabetic hobbits is what you think we should focus on? I'll keep my chip and say any place that jokes about diabetes should piss off.

It is not a nice disease.

OP here

(Anonymous) 2017-08-25 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I was serious. I have a family history of type 2 diabetes and my A1C tests on the high side of "normal". I'm on medication and if I don't watch my diet and exercise regularly, I WILL end up diabetic.

Re: OP here

(Anonymous) 2017-08-26 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
I always assumed people who said it similarly did it in your context OP. Rarely heard it used otherwise as makes no sense (okay, sure, maybe there is some statistical anomaly or it is an idiom in such and such area).

Really? You've never herd people reference something decadent with something like "and then you get diabetes!" Or "That's diabetes in a glass, right there!" Or "This (one particular item) is why you have diabetes, America!"

Anon you replied to: Heard it rarely said by parents to kids in the 90s as a cautionary tale. Never heard that said about America xD - the stereotype is mostly fat (not so much nowadays) or full of chemicals or cholesterol.

Everyonr I know says "heart attack in a dish"

I mean, statistically eating like that leads to diabetes. It's not like it's a misnomer.

you must live in a very sheltered environment because people can't stfu about my diabetes even though it has nothing to do with what I eat. huh

Then you should know better than to spew such crap about diabetes.

I hope you never are diagnosed because it is a life of judgement on the how, why and when. Anything you put in your mouth is under judgement. That glass of water? Questioned. Tea? Questioned? The meal your doctor has prescribed to you and insists you cannot deviate from in amount of carbs for the next 40 years? Questioned. Basically anything you do from the moment that D goes against your name is questioned and it all stems from the same bullshit like jokes over lotr movies.

Diet, exercise, genes, environment are all elements in type TWO of diabetes. Not ONE.

Not that it matters.

We have a disease that will kill us one day one way and joking about it is pathetic.

I'll make jokes about my condition if I want to. You can decide what's best for you. It's probably a good idea not to set your heart on policing everyone's sense of humor though, because that doesn't sound like a realistic life goal.

I don't but if I see people making light of a disease that is killing people slowly but surely because not enough people take it seriously then I will say something. And so will a lot of other diabetics. So joke ahead but know on platforms like this other diabetics will speak up about it. Cause what you see as a joke others can and will see as reasons to tell you that your disease is your fault and worse things. I understand making light of your condition to cope but there are places for that. Platforms like this just do damage in the long run. When prices are sky rocketing for us to get supplies. When Docs say 'you can only have X number because you're ONLY type 2'. When people tell you to 'just eat that'. It all stems from jokes like this feeding a misunderstanding public that tells itself we did this and deserve it. Each to their own though.

Does it hurt to be offended 100% of the time?

(Anonymous) 2017-08-26 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Does it hurt to be an asshole who makes wild assumptions about people?

OP again

(Anonymous) 2017-08-26 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
You mean, the way you assumed I was making light of diabetes when in fact I'm pre-diabetic and what I said about risking diabetes was true? :)

BUUURN

Re: OP again

(Anonymous) 2017-08-26 09:26 am (UTC)(link)
You WERE making light of diabetes and frankly showing how fucking ignorant you are. Your family history is the cause here. Eating like a fucking idiot doesn't cause diabetes. What the fuck do you think caused mine? I was 2 when I was diagnosed and fucking jokes like this have been shoved in my face my whole god damn life.

Be fucking specific. Those of us with T1 are fucking sick and tired of your fat ass making it harder on us.

Please read the OPs comments in this thread and personally apologise to them. Anything else proves you are just a chippy dick, not a victim.

no but it hurts to be judged 100% of the time as if we could prevent a disease nothing could stop. most of t2 cases cannot be prevented either. Sugar doesn't cause diabetes. Mind blown I know

(Anonymous) 2017-08-26 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Aw, sweetie!

(Anonymous) 2017-08-26 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
It never ceases to amaze me how hard people will try to look for things to be offended by. Or at least, to claim to be offended by. I doubt you're actually upset as opposed to just trying to stir the pot. You do realize you don't get imaginary internet points for it here like you might on Tumblr, right?

(Anonymous) 2017-08-26 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
You can doubt all you want, but I am diabetic, it is something I struggle with and and when people are seemingly making light of it like "haha, this is how you give yourself diabetes!" it does bother the fuck out of me. So, no. It's not about getting "internet tumblr points."

(Anonymous) 2017-08-26 09:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah nothing says fun like the disease that's slowly killing you because your immune system attacked your body instead of a virus. WOW FUCKING HILARIOUS.

T2 people need to be specific so they stop fucking everything up for those of us with T1.

nah i'm real world upset every day every time people think the disease that is killing me slowly could be stopped by what i eat or what I ate as a child. but i can say that on my tumblr too if it makes you feel better
