Heath Ledger. Eating lunch in my college cafeteria. Some girl at the table behind me leaned over to ask me if I had heard he died.

I was working at Subway. I vaguely heard him mentioned on the radio but really couldn't hear what was being talked about. I come home and find I had 3 voicemails left by 3 different people regarding it.

It was like 3am and my roomate came barreling up the stairs and barged into my room just to wake me up to tell me. The next day I thought it was a dream until I heard it on the news.

I think I was reading the news at work when I was supposed to be working. :P

I was using the computer in the computer lab in my dorm building and my roommate walked in to tell me.

I had no clue who Heath Ledger even was at the time.

I mean... I can remember where I was when my grandma died... but that was only in 2010, so... I don't remember where I was when my other grandma died (I was 11), or my grandfather (I was 7).

SA

To be honest, I have no recollection of remembering where I was/what I was doing for anyone I know (or don't know if we're talking about famous people) when I found out they'd died. Is that unusual?

I only remember my grandma because I was on vacation and my parents took a while to get ahold of me.

Carrie Fisher. I was in the living room with my mom watching the latest season of Vikings, when my father came back and told me he heard on the radio in the car that "the star wars actress, she's dead" in the least tactful way possible. I was pretty shaken.

I was sitting....where i'm sitting now, actually, in our sun room just scrolling through tumblr and someone made a post like NO NO NO NO NO NO.

They work in the film industry so I thought they missed out a chance to go to some kind of indie film festival.....until I saw their tags.

I went "Wait.....she didn't DIE, did she?" Until I clicked.

My dad was a huge Marc Bolan/T-rRex fan growing up, and his mother apparently broke the news to him by going "Who's that singer you really like? The one with the curly hair and the glitter? Marc Bolan? Yeah, he's dead."

I was waiting for a takeout burger from this place one block down from my apartment when some guy walked into the burger joint and said Michael Jackson just died.

I was working at a call centre, one person found out and the news spread pretty fast. I was surprised because he was young.

Lady Di. Had a sleepover at a friend's house, came down in the morning to her mother having read about it on the teletext.

I was doing my homework in the living room with my parents when the news broke. I was really little and didn't really know her, but my parents said she was a very nice princess and I felt sad that the nice princess had died.

I was on vacation with my family at a hot springs. It wasn't a commercial place though, it was just this non-official thing that had been set up around a source, so there weren't any phones or tvs or anything, so we hadn't heard the news right away.

But some new folks arrived, and they told everyone. I remember people being quite shocked and sad. I was pretty young, though, so I didn't really get it. I think that's why I remember it so clearly, because I was confused that it meant so much to everyone.

Bernie Mac - I remember waking up at like 2 AM and turning on CNN where Larry King was talking about him and his illness and how he was a dear friend

Then I went to bed and woke up at 8 and he was dead.

Also Steve Jobs - I went in the bathroom to read Son of Neptune for a few hours and when I came out he was dead.

I never remember where I was when anyone died. I just know how I felt.

Ronald Reagan

Not due to any great affection, but the only presidential death where I remember where I was (but I think the only other ones in my lifetime have been Nixon and Ford). I was in a car on the first day of a 3-day drive across the western US and the news came on the radio. The next day we stopped at a rest stop in Kansas that was home to a memorial to Knute Rockne and I thought it was a funny coincidence.

David Bowie

It was late at night in the central US. I couldn't sleep. Got up to browse the internet for a while and immediately came across the headline that he had died on the first news site I went to.

I had walked into my parents' bedroom after school on a Friday afternoon where my dad was reading the newspaper when he said "John Ritter died."

Similarly, the following year, my best friend at the time's mother died. She died Valentine's Day weekend, and on that particular Saturday I was over at another friend's house. My dad came to pick me up a few minutes earlier than agreed upon, and when I complained about it (as I did, all the time. I was and still am very picky about agreed upon meeting times and whatnot) he said "[best friend] called. Her mom died."

...He's not great with tact or timing, my dad. Both of these revelations were like gut punches to me because they just came out of left field. I was 10 and 11, respectively.
