1000..... Dollars? Euros? Pounds? Pesos? Wontons?

iBuyPower is great if you're in the US. All of their stuff is built and specced for gaming and is good quality, and you can get a lot of computer for a grand. I think Chillblast is their UK equivalent? There's plenty of other companies out there as well.

But to be clear, a grand might not get you a laptop that can play the latest crop of games coming out, since laptops are WAAAAAAY more expensive than towers and their components are limited by the space and power supply. Unless you literally cannot buy a tower for some reason (like me), you really should consider them instead.

rpgs are often more systems-intensive than you'd think. DA:I and ME:A both have fairly high minimum requirements, for example, and I know a lot of people had trouble running both on older/weaker systems.

The other thing I should add is that with modern games RAM is really the number you want to look at, more than anything else. You can have an old processor and a shitty graphics card, and if you have at least 8gigs of RAM you'll be able to run most anything. But, you need to be careful because a lot of places will get tricksy with the numbers. They'll say it's 16gigs, for example, when it's really two 8s, (which, that other 8 is p much useless to any casual user).

Not the OP, but out of curiosity, as someone who knows little about computers, why is two 8s not as good as one 16 for a casual user? I tried looking it up but couldn't find much, as most seemed to say two was better for something called "dual channel"? I'm supposed to help my mom buy a desktop (because my limited knowledge is better than her none), so I thought that might be good to know?

Well, I'm not a huge tech guy, but from my understanding after researching stuff for my laptop....

Basically, your programs (and maybe even your graphics card idr) will normally use only one set of RAM. If you know how, you can force games and programs to run off both, but it still doesnt work the same as having one set of 16.

Each set is separate. If your program needs, for example, 10 gigs... Maybe it's possible for that programs tasks to be divided between the two sets, but if it can't be divided then neither of those 8s will be enough.

But unless your mom is a power gamer or runs photoshop or something, she probably doesnt need 16 gigs of RAM. A basic block of 6 would run just about anything afaik.
