PC Gamers

I'm looking into buying a gaming laptop. I'd mainly use it for rpgs, like Dragon Age. What laptop do you have? Or what are some good options? My budget is around 1000, could go higher but less than 2000.

Check out this subreddit. https://www.reddit.com/r/SuggestALaptop/

You can either ask (they helped me out a lot when I did) OR use information in the sidebar.

Thanks! I'll look through it later.

You're going to need a laptop with a higher-end quad core processer (e.g. Intel i7), a dedicated graphics card, and as much RAM (16GB is the max I can find) and hard drive space (at least 1TB) as you can possibly get. A grand should be enough for a decent one.

SA Or you could buy a console. I know there are limitations but it would save you a lot of money.

"I want a laptop, can I have suggestions for one?"
"Get a console."

Is basically the same thing as,

"I want to have a burger, can someone suggest a good place nearby?"
"Eat a salad!"

AYRT I answered the OP's question with specs. I'm only one of two people who actually answered. But if they were struggling for money -- I have no idea of their circumstances -- and £1000 is a hell of a lot of money to drop on a single item, then a console is a viable alternative for the kind of games they want to play. If US prices are similar to UK prices then they could save about $600.

It's not like I said PCs were bad or PC gaming was bad. Why is there always something in this comm out to pick a fight over something completely innocuous?

Because when you're looking for something specific (and a laptop is a hell of a lot more versatile than a console ever is), someone going, "OR GET THIS INSTEAD IT'S CHEAPER" is basically unsolicited advice.

I already gave them advice about the PC/Laptop specs. I'm sorry you're having a bad day or whatever (I genuinely mean that) but I'm having a shitty time too and this is really stressing me out. I genuinely was trying to be helpful and every time I post on this community someone either bitches me out or tells me to kill myself.

Thank you. I could have mentioned that I have a console. I want a laptop cause it's portable.

No worries OP. Just to clarify I wasn't making a moral judgement about PCs. Their graphics tend to be better and obviously you can install mods, plus there are way more RPGs available for them.

I wasn't trying to cause offence.

Dragon Age Origins is a pretty old game now, I'd think even a $500 laptop could play it fine.

The third Dragon Age is a bit of a beast and needs a better graphics card, but it's still a few years old now. You might want to check out the "minimum recommended specifications" are for a few of the newer games you want to play as a starting point.

1000..... Dollars? Euros? Pounds? Pesos? Wontons?

iBuyPower is great if you're in the US. All of their stuff is built and specced for gaming and is good quality, and you can get a lot of computer for a grand. I think Chillblast is their UK equivalent? There's plenty of other companies out there as well.

But to be clear, a grand might not get you a laptop that can play the latest crop of games coming out, since laptops are WAAAAAAY more expensive than towers and their components are limited by the space and power supply. Unless you literally cannot buy a tower for some reason (like me), you really should consider them instead.

rpgs are often more systems-intensive than you'd think. DA:I and ME:A both have fairly high minimum requirements, for example, and I know a lot of people had trouble running both on older/weaker systems.

I have a custom job that's pretty much identical to this....

But it's overkill unless you're really serious about modding or whatever.

The other thing I should add is that with modern games RAM is really the number you want to look at, more than anything else. You can have an old processor and a shitty graphics card, and if you have at least 8gigs of RAM you'll be able to run most anything. But, you need to be careful because a lot of places will get tricksy with the numbers. They'll say it's 16gigs, for example, when it's really two 8s, (which, that other 8 is p much useless to any casual user).

Not the OP, but out of curiosity, as someone who knows little about computers, why is two 8s not as good as one 16 for a casual user? I tried looking it up but couldn't find much, as most seemed to say two was better for something called "dual channel"? I'm supposed to help my mom buy a desktop (because my limited knowledge is better than her none), so I thought that might be good to know?

Well, I'm not a huge tech guy, but from my understanding after researching stuff for my laptop....

Basically, your programs (and maybe even your graphics card idr) will normally use only one set of RAM. If you know how, you can force games and programs to run off both, but it still doesnt work the same as having one set of 16.

Each set is separate. If your program needs, for example, 10 gigs... Maybe it's possible for that programs tasks to be divided between the two sets, but if it can't be divided then neither of those 8s will be enough.

But unless your mom is a power gamer or runs photoshop or something, she probably doesnt need 16 gigs of RAM. A basic block of 6 would run just about anything afaik.

Dollars. I'll take a look at that site. Thanks. I want a laptop because it's portable and I hate all the cables my consoles have.
