Honestly? I'd be wary about the words of a bitter ex-wife. And if he did do it, at least he isn't the one airing all this dirty laundry where their kids can read it.

I frankly think it's a load of horseshit to get more angry at the person who's speaking up and treat that like the bigger problem.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-31 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I would agree if this were anything other than airing dirty laundry.

I want to know if the person who's based his reputation as an important figure in entertainment on the idea that he is empowering women is actually being a total piece of shit to women on a regular basis. I think that's relevant information.

is actually being a total piece of shit to women

Sure, I'd want to know that too. But neither of us do know that.

We know he was being a selfish jerk to one woman on an ongoing basis. That's all. And as much as the Joss haters would like to believe otherwise, being a selfish jerk to one woman does not a misogynist make. If that were the case, every lesbian who had ever cheated on her partner would be a misogynist and a bad feminist.

Also DA.

Assuming those lesbians even identified as a feminist. Being lesbian isn't a statement. And someone is a misogynist before their sexuality even comes into it. It's likely that lesbians can be misogynists while cheating, but that's unrelated to this.

He sounds like he's been unreliable and unfaithful to multiple women. Someone doesnt go into relationships 'not expecting them to last more than a year' if you're not in them for more than a good fuck, to put it crudely. If he calls himself a powerful producer to 'needy' women, who's betting he made promises he never kept, re: furthering their careers with promise of sex.

On to more concrete conclusions, him cheating and lying to his wife the entire time for 20 years is very narcissistic behaviour.

Regardless of the positive impacts he or his shows have had on you (or us, even), it doesn't change the fact that what he's done is very disappointing behaviour and as much as I want to respect him, I have to say, what a raging dickhead.

+1 Yep. Amazing and sad that people are eager to be so hard on the ex-wife, but not Whedon.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-31 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I believe it, but I do agree that she shouldn't be embarrassing their whole family with this crap.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-31 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think she's embarrassed her family as much as Whedon has, with his infidelity and pretending to be a feminist ally.

tbh I never get the "what about the kids finding out" argument when it comes to celebrities talking about marital problems. (I heard it as a response to Beyonce's Lemonade also.) In my experience, parents are way worse at hiding stuff like that from their kids than they think they are.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-31 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never known any child of divorced or separated parents, myself included, who greeted "we're getting a divorce" with "holy shit I had no idea."

(Anonymous) 2017-09-01 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
This. I've known many kids whose parents divorced, and rarely was it a surprise. Parents like to fool themselves that they're somehow keeping all the fighting contained, but that just isn't the case.

It's never a surprise, we hear all of the fighting like you wouldn't believe, a lot of parents have no idea just how loud they are when screaming at each other. I still remember the time my mother managed to wake me out of a dead sleep by screaming at my step dad. And I was able to hear her clear as a bell from down the hall through their closed bedroom door and mine.

Pointing out that someone is a hypocrite and a borderline sexual predator (because preying upon young women who work on your show when you are the creator/writer is a huge power imbalance) is more of a PSA than spiteful gossip, IMO. But I'm sure many cheating spouses rely upon that argument to help keep their cheating under wraps.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-31 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Not to mention letting him parade around claiming to be an icon of feminism.

Wow you are making some presumptions here. We don't know who Joss cheated with, and we don't know the circumstances surrounding the affair. To presume it was predatory on his part without knowing much of anything about it is pretty fucked up. He cheated, it was a shitty thing to do and he should feel ashamed. But that's all we have to go on right now.

This awful worst case scenario people seem to be playing in their heads about him is not just unconfirmed, it hasn't even been implied.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-01 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I agree. I think if it had been a problem there would have at least been some allegations of sexual harassment, but I haven't heard of any. Women aren't incapable of making their own choices. Infantilizing these women isn't much better than what Joss was doing.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-01 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Oh ffs this is how fake rape allegations get started. There hasn't even been a mention of sexual harassment.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-01 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
I believe that he cheated, more than once, and I believe that he probably did say some cringey shit when he was trying to explain himself to his wife. But I agree that his ex airing their dirty laundry this way doesn't speak well of her. Basically, him cheating on her for years was needlessly cruel and shitty. Her then telling the entire world about it was also needlessly cruel and shitty.
