I got to work today and someone had taken it upon themselves to do half my job "to help." And it's not like they did it wrong and technically I answer to them, but...what I am I supposed to do all day except stew in the mild panic that they donn' t think I know what I'm doing?

I can relate. I'm still fairly new at my job and even though I pretty much know how to do most of the tasks, whenever someone does it for me I always have this niggling feeling that they just don't trust me to do it properly.

If they manage you and you really are distractingly worried that they don't think you do some part of your job well, it seems perfectly in-line for you to ask for feedback on it (like, "thank you for the help earlier. I just wanted to check if there's anything I should be doing differently with task x" or smthg) . It just sounds like there was a need for that task to go through the pipeline quicker; whether the "to help" meant "because your current performance isn't up to it" or "because you/the department is overloaded with work right now" or even "because I got nothing else to do and this was here, so why not and now everyone gets to go home early" could potentially be clarified with a quick talk.

It's more like...their department was outsourced to my department at a different location. We do the bulk of what they used to do but they have final say of the final product. It's not been an easy transition. There's been a whole lot of "well, this is how we've always done it!" on their end, and not a lot of support from my supervisors here.

man that sucks. I have recently had some people from my department come over to do some of what I'm doing at the request of some surgeons, which I know probably has nothing to do with me but it irks me because it's my job and I want to do it, especially when I'm bored (and the people in question are also really annoying and puttering around my space for an hour)
