I really wanted to like her but a lot of her actions have turned me off of her.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-14 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't care for her, either. That's partly due to the crappy writing, though. They really have her doing some ridiculous things just to give her more to do, I guess.

This.

She's the Castiel of Daredevil.

I think it got a bit better when they went their separate ways, on all fronts.

I liked their dynamic in Defenders, where it's kind of like they're trying to help their friend kick a habit.

It's weird to contextualize it that way, though. He's been hearing people suffering and dying all around him since he was a little kid, and pretending the urge to help people is like a drug addiction is just...wrong to my mind. His adrenaline addiction and his anger is something he needs help with. But you can tell from the first Defenders episode after the earthquake when he hears bad shit happening and his face gets all twisted up that his motivation isn't some monkey on his back.

NAYRT

I think for Matt, it's not just about helping people. There's some kind of self-sacrifice, almost to the point of seeking self-destruction. He doesn't just want to help people, he wants to completely use himself up and destroy himself for the sake of other people. And that's not healthy or good.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-14 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
+1

I mean, Foggy gave him things where he was helping people. And there was the case he took at the beginning. He doesn't have to be self-destructive, even if he's doing the vigilante thing. However, his Daredevil schtick is something that's linked to his self-destructive behavior.

Think of it from their perspective, of when they found out.

Foggy: His best friend is bleeding the fuck out on the floor.

Karen: Their company just broke up, largely because the vigilante side of things was causing Matt's civilian life to implode.

If I was in their side of things, even knowing the whole "he can see and hear everything going on," I'd still think the same way.

Honestly, I mostly care about Marvel Netflix show characters in proportion to how hot I think they are, and she's pretty hot, so

(Anonymous) 2017-09-14 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like we never really got to see much of Matt and Foggy's dynamic, really. Besides the college flashbacks, either Karen was there, or they were fighting, or both. It ended up frequently giving me the impression that Matt didn't really care about their "dream" of having a law firm together, and that he was just using Foggy from the start, and that Foggy knew and was bitter about that but didn't want to end the friendship, either because he was obsessed with Matt or because he was too cowardly to.

Which is... probably not what they were going for.

It didn't help that Deborah Ann Woll is probably the best actor of the three, so she ended up seeming bizarrely more emotionally invested than the other two, which made them seem even more like their friendship was a sham from the start. Karen really does weird things to the dynamic overall, so I can see not liking them as a trio. I was certainly never convinced that they all worked well together, and I liked Karen.

Good point. I would've liked to see more development of Matt and Foggy's friendship before Karen enters the picture. That probably would've helped the trio's relationship feel more balanced and natural, otherwise this hot chick shows up and all of a sudden she's on equal terms with someone you've been friends with for years and that's usually not how things work.

I'm not particularly into any of them as characters much tbh, like I thought the moment where Karen killed Wesley in s1 was an interesting stepping point but then the series seemed to forget that it even happened. Thus my interest in her started evaporating as well, especially since it didn't seem like the writing knew what it wanted to do with her half the time.

I was never into Matt or Foggy much even in s1 and as it currently stands unless they're going to bring in a villain I'm into I won't bother with s3.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-15 06:00 am (UTC)(link)
I was just mad they killed off Wes. I loved Wes,despite the bastard he was.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-15 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I loved Karen's relationship with Frank in S2, and I like Karen with Foggy, but Karen and Matt? Booooring.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-15 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I thought her arc with Frank was fascinating.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-15 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I didn't think they worked as a trio. The Matt-Foggy dynamic is interesting for it's dysfunction and the Karen-Foggy dynamic works because the actors have good platonic chemistry, but the three of them together is just off. Probably because the Matt-Karen dynamic doesn't work at all.

I like Karen on her own (despite the ridiculous writing) and I liked her interaction with Frank and her friendship with Foggy, but anytime the show focused on the trio or Matt/Karen, I was just bored to tears. Hopefully, the DD people realize Karen's better off doing her own thing and they won't try to keep forcing the trio.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-15 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel the same. I actually like her as a character, but have no interest in Matt/Karen.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-15 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
I hear you there, anon. I don't care for Karen at all, but I'm afraid of what speaking out will do.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-15 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
I like Karen a lot (and also Karen & Foggy and Matt & Foggy), but whenever it's Karen & Matt the writing suddenly turns her into Love Interest Chick which is incredibly dull. I hope that her being a major part of the Punisher series means we don't get that anymore.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-15 08:39 am (UTC)(link)
I absolutely hate Karen and it has nothing to do with sexism. Anyone who assumes that is being an idiot.

I hear you, anon. I think in general Marvel (not just Netflix Marvel) does a piss poor job of writing these female sidekicks that are supposedly supercompetent but come off as without personalities. It's like every hero must be paired with a love interest that is indistinguishable in personality from any other one. The big exceptions are Luke Cage and Jessica Jones, I think by virtue of having just more female characters to begin with.

I'm with you, OP. Karen sucks. Every time she shows up to simultaneously scold, meddle with, and pant at Matt I want to pull my eyes out.
