Roger Ebert said this and he has a point:

But when Raquel Welch speaks, she sounds like every drive-in waitress and every beauty queen and every female high school class president and every not-very-bright good sport you ever heard. She stands there in that bikini, with her hair flowing in the breeze, and her face looking haughty and beautiful, and then she opens her mouth and says, "Gollee, you fellows have got yourself the wrong gal. I didn't kill him, honest. I mean, really."

And the whole thing falls apart. Raquel plays a dental technician from California, who comes to Europe for skydiving championships and is recruited into a spy ring to get back an H-bomb trigger. And she's in lots of intrigue and danger, with Chinese spies and all, and the whole thing depends on maintaining the fantasy. It isn't fun unless you can believe, at least a little bit, that this beautiful girl is really involved in this business.

And you can't. The whole plot depends on her being at least a little credible, and she isn't. In the end, she isn't even very sexy. Her voice holds no promise or mystery, and her movements aren't alluring. She isn't at ease before the camera. She moves stiffly, she stands awkwardly, and when she talks it doesn't matter what she's saying, it comes out the same.

What a shame. Maybe Raquel Welch is the archetypal American sex symbol of our time, and she's what we deserve. Jane Russell was dumb and sultry, and Marilyn Monroe was fresh and funny, and Carroll Baker was nervous and anemic, and finally we get Raquel Welch, who is perfect. An Amazon. But don't touch, she might break.

I get the point of this, but I also I hate this kind of commentary about the flaws of actresses who are also sex symbols. She got hired as an actress because she was amazingly beautiful FFS. There were probably hundreds of actresses who could have made her roles 'believable', but they wouldn't have fit the 'fantasy' that the producers were going for and people (i.e. men) would have complained that X actress didn't have the 'presence' (i.e. body/face) of Raquel Welch or some such shit. And in both these scenarios the women who get chosen to play some bullshit male fantasy are the ones who get shit on if they then fall short. Of a fantasy. Ugh.

Where were the bullshit commentaries on how Sean Connery isn't believable as an international spy because he has an incredibly recognisable accent, and plus he isn't believably 'sexy' enough to get all the women he does because of x,y,z characteristics? Oh right, they don't exist.

I'm pretty sure Sean hasn't had all the plastic surgery in the world, and I know he can actually pronounce English words Raquel has problems with, like "look" and "help".

How is that Raquel's fault though? Isn't it the casting director/producers' faults for choosing physical beauty over acting ability/diction? Why does she have to bear the brunt of the criticism for what is actually a critique on what an industry force feeds a society and what society accepts as a portrayal of an ideal woman?

Also, acting is cutthroat business where appearances can be everything. Many actors and actresses have come out about the pressure to get plastic surgery and their reasons to get it or not. People have been discussing the ethics of plastic surgery for decades, and I'm pretty sure the consensus on either side is that individuals shouldn't be singled out for choosing to go that route.
