Less well known horror movies

[personal profile] philstar22 2017-09-29 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
I'm looking for some recs for less well known horror movies that are good. Preferably in English. I'm in the mood for horror, and stuck in bed with nothing to do. I'm kind of Supernatural'd out, so I'd like to watch some horror movies I haven't seen before.

I prefer more psychological and creepy stuff. Gore is fine, but not gore just for the sake of gore. So not torture porn.

Try Hush, They Look Like People, Pontypool, The Awakening, and The Hallow. All on Netflix.

I liked the Japanese original of "Pulse." It's very understated and has no gore at all. It's not in English though, unfortunately.

I also liked "A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night" but come to think of it that isn't in English either.

Damn, don't I ever watch movies in English?

Ha. Yes. Japanese horror is great. It is just that I'm a bit loopy for painkillers right now, so I'm not sure I'd be able to follow subtitles.

Jacob's Ladder. It's a psychological horror dealing with a Vietnam veteran who is having nightmares to the point where he's not sure what's real.

The Devil's Backbone. Spanish Del Toro film about an a boy in an orphanage during the Spanish Civil War who starts seeing a ghost. ...it's early Del Toro being Del Toro. Pan's Labyrinth is its spiritual sequel, since it's also a horror film and set just after the Spanish Civil War.

Try "The Devil Rides Out" (aka "The Devil's Bride" in the USA), a 1968 film about a satanic cult starring Christopher Lee in an unusual-for-him good guy role. "Salem's Lot" is a 1979 movie based on a Stephen King story of the same name, and is about vampires. "Don't Look Now" is a creepy 1973 movie about a couple in Venice, Italy who are haunted by the death of their daughter, stars Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie. "The Company of Wolves" is a 1984 film about werewolves in a kind of fairy take setting.

Gerald's Game is set to be released tomorrow on Netflix. I don't know if it'll be good or gory, but it is supposed to be psychological horror and the trailer looked just as creepy as I would have imagined. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=twbGU2CqqQU

As much as I grumble at the over-emphasis on top/bottom casting, The Magpie Lord wasn't bad overall.

Thank you, though? Lol.

LF characters that were bullied as kid in canon

(Anonymous) 2017-09-29 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Or even headcanoned as bullied by fandom. I mostly want to look up fic of bullied characters going back for a high school reunion to show up all their classmates who made fun of them.

Are you looking for a specific fandom? because I think that makes a difference. there are a ton of LOTR, Hobbit, Star Wars, and Star Trek videos set to music of other genres.

Not in particular. I like reboot Trek, LOTR, MCU, Sherlock, uhhhh most other big ones. I'll take any fandoms.

I love vids and would be happy to rec some, but I don't want to pull together a bunch of recs if they're not actually what you're looking for.

First question: Do you consider indie to be pop/rock? Like, The National, Airborn Toxic Event, TV On the Radio, that kind of thing? What about popular rap music? Like, how far away from radio top 40 do we have to get here?

And do you have any fandoms you're particularly interested in/not interested in?

Re: Fanvids set to non pop/rock

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2017-09-29 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
Some indie is pop. I would not consider the three you mentioned as pop. I would love some set to rap music. I will take techno, dubstep, Hell even country.

I can't think of many fandoms I am completely not interested in. Maybe Star Wars and DCU if looking at the big ones. But I am open to most fandoms (and multi fandom).

Welp. Maybe some of these will suit you.

One of my favourite Person Of Interest vids using a brilliant cover of Call Me Maybe.
