I saw an article that looked interesting discussing male violence towards sex dolls and what it could mean, yadda yadda.

Instead it was this huge thing about how sex dolls are all rape fantasies because objects can't consent to sex so all sex involving an object is rape and toxic masculinity etc. etc.

And I'm just....

Dildos.

Vibrators.

How can you do an entire thing on how men using sex toys is rape because there's no other person to consent, and forget about the fact plenty of women enjoy their toys and none of their toys can consent either. I'm not getting off to raping my vibe ffs.

Well, dildos and vibrators don't look like people. And there are some men who like sex dolls as women who can't argue, say no, disagree, or do anything but what the men want. And that is creepy. But that isn't all sex doll users and I don't think they are inherently so.

If it focused on, I don't know, actually interviewing and compiling data on what guys liked about it and also their feelings on women and was any kind of a psychological data discussion I would feel differently. But it jumped right to the idea masturbating with an object is raping that object and they want something that is always available and can't say no, a literal object!

"Sex dolls not only don’t challenge male entitlement to women’s bodies, they entrench it. Even the term “owner” for the buyer of the doll implies this. It sends a message that men can “own” a sex object which is designed for them to do whatever they like with. The owners are entitled to act out whatever fantasy they have on their doll. "

This.

It does sound like the article went straight for the worst and most accusatory conclusion, though, which definitely isnt doing their cause any favors. Like, as much as I personally an deeply sick of being treated as something lesser for men to try to get their way with and have their way with, and having experiened that makes me inclined to not give men the benefit of the doubt when it comes to their sexual ideology, I can still see how, for most guys, an article jumping to the worst conclusions like that would be infuriating.

I mean, sex dolls (especially the hyper realistic real dolls) can be a little creepy, but yeah, the idea that its all rape is weird and dumb.

I don't think sex dolls are even that common, so I don't think its that much of an issue. I think if a guy is going to own a sex toy it would probably just be a fleshlight, not a whole doll.

Not to mention that there are man-shaped sexdolls as well.

Yeah, that's a really poorly made argument at best.

I dunno, provided the guy didn't have any creepy skeletons in his closet, I'd be a little weirded out by someone who chatted at his sex doll (thinking specifically of those uncanny valley dolls here) about his day before having sex with it, and generally treated it "well" in bed. But I'd be way more hesitant to be alone with someone who "choked" his sex doll or used it as a punching bag or screamed at it. I'd feel a bit sorry for the first guy and think of him as sad and maybe awkward, but I'd be scared of the second guy.

I'd be scared of someone who "mistreated" a sex doll too, but it sounds like the article jumped to some nonsensical conclusions. I mean if you own a sex doll you're its owner. If you say you're its husband or companion or something that's when it starts getting weird.

Note: I have known of people who did silly stuff to sex dolls as a joke, including my favorite band, and I'm not scared of them. But if someone was acting honestly angry at one I'd be disturbed. (Just, you know, full disclosure.)

That sounds really dumb and "evil menz"-y to me.

What about all the women who own those love pillow things with their favorite characters printed on them? Dakimakura, I guess. Are they raping their pillows if they masturbate with/on/around them?

Like there's a lot of interesting things you could discuss when it comes to fringe sexual items like this. Love dolls, fuck machines, sex swings, mega-sized Bad Dragon injector tentacle cocks, extensive Figma collections for hot glueing, dildo drones, whatever. What's the circumstances that lead someone to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on a sex object? What's the psychology behind it?

And how often do sex doll owners actually "abuse" their dolls? And how would you gather that info? And if it IS common, then maybe that's a good thing and should be more socially accepted? Since if someone's fetish is, idk, necrophilia, it's probably better that they act out that fantasy with a doll rather than a person.

...dildo...drones? Uh. This is one of those things that morbid curiosity wants to google and the rest of me is cringing away from. Although now when I read any books or news articles that mention drone strikes, my inner twelve year old will snicker.

While on a sick day I watched a Netflix documentary on sex robots and yeah... most of the guys in it fit exactly what that article talked about. But the documentary took time to talk to these men about their motivations and background. They didn't just instantly label them as creepy. (Though frankly they were all creeps.)

Sex dolls and robots are absolutely going to increase misogyny. It will blur the line between private violent fantasy and permissible reality. And as usual things will turn out shitting for real women.

Re: Minor NSFW Vent

(Anonymous) 2017-10-03 10:48 am (UTC)(link)
On the plus side, if it does happen. The very first time someone with a sex robot hurts a real women the media's going to be all over that shit. I mean can you imagine the headlines when a weird creepy sex deviant actually does what's been predicted?

You can't rape an inanimate object. It's a fucking inanimate object! In order to rape something, it has to have a will that you can violate. WTF even?

I'm going to not respond to this in much depth because it's been brought to my attention that I am far too militant about this shit.

But I disapprove of the premise of the article.

I am going... if there is a serious scientific link between people who use sex toys and people who commit violence, I am 100% for investigating it. (Same as how stuff is currently investigating how many actual criminals go animal cruelty to domestic cruelty to attacking strangers vs. how few animal abusers there are in the general population.)

But with no scientific study or link, it's as much pseudoscience as PUA 'modern females are turned on by negging and violent alpha behavior because in caveman days violent men killed more mammoths and a man with a lot of dead mammoths could feed a lot of pregnant females'
