I would just like to politely but very firmly say that I thoroughly disagree.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-04 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Disagree all you want, but Star Trek, to me, has lost the Star Trek spirit it had once and I miss it. The Orville, as silly as it can be at times, makes me think of the times when Star Trek was still Star Trek.

I'm always very, very skeptical about people talking about "the Star Trek spirit" going missing at some point or other. Because usually, when people talk about "the Star Trek spirit", what they have in mind is much narrower than what Star Trek has actually done and been as a franchise.

But even leaving that aside, I just strongly disagree with the idea of treating Seth MacFarlane as the holder of the torch or any of that, and I don't think the show is very good personally.

I'm inclined to agree with your first paragraph. Every new iteration of Star Trek has made changes to the overall feel, including the more popular ones, and it's been about a lot of different things.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-04 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
The Star Trek spirit is alive and well and living on Discovery. The Orville is an awkward and dull mash of extremely cliche stories with flat jokes. I've seen better Star Trek parodies by amateurs at cons, and I'm not saying those were good.

I think there needs to be a timeline of every time Star Trek was destroyed forever, just as there's one for Doctor Who.

And I agree with you. The show is awful and nothing near the quality of any Star Trek series.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-04 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I tried watching TOS. That shit was awful. Voyager isn't bad though.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-05 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
I couldn't finish the first half hour I was so thoroughly repulsed. Haha his wife is cheating on him with a guy who squirts jism from his head! "Who left the seat down?" jokes in the year 4017! Yeah, definitely a step up from Star Trek.

Christ almighty.

I am so mad at Star Trek right now with all this pay per episode bullshit I am having a hard time considering myself a fan anymore. CBS can kiss my ass.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-04 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, same.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-04 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
And yet in my country it's on Netflix and the easiest to access that it's ever been. Thanks, CBS!

(Anonymous) 2017-10-04 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Hate you just a little bit.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-05 08:06 am (UTC)(link)
Same and I love it. High five!

I tried to watch this show and I found it boring. The pacing was bad and pretty much everything about it was flat. Jokes, acting, everything.

I'm glad that you find what you want in this show, but oof.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-04 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I had the same problem. I really wanted to like this show, and I appreciate how they are covering serious topics, but it's just not sparking with me.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-04 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't really care for the pilot two-parter of Discovery, but I quite like the last episode, where we actually get to Discovery, and I really like Captain Lorca. So, I'd say it's a bit early to be writing off Discovery, at least IMO.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-05 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Is this show any good? Should I be watching?

Not the OP but I love The Orville.
Granted the only Trek I ever really liked was TNG and some of Voyager, so I don't consider myself a Trekkie. And other than early Family Guy and one episode of American Dad I don't like Seth MacFarlan.

I got through 20 minutes of Discovery then skipped to the end of the first episode. I didn't like Michael, everything felt more Mass Effect than Star Trek, it was too dark, shadowy and muddy, with CGI jizz all over the place. Saru is an unimaginative character design, the only interesting character is dead.

Versus The Orville which I personally find funny, has a sense of presence (Oh now we're in the hanger, now we're in medical, now where in the captain's quarters vs Now we're in space, now we're in a black and silver room. Now we're in...another black and silver room, only this time with Klingons...), I know more about all the crew in one ep then I ever got to learn in Discovery.

The only thing I liked about Discovery was the corpse ship the Klingons had.

All Discovery made me want is for a Mass Effect movie and also for The Expanse to return.

I enjoy it a lot.

Because of Fox's fail promo painting this show like another version of Galaxy Quest, the Pilot was off to me. The expectations I had weren't met, but for some reason I couldn't help but watch it in the tone the trailers gave it anyways.

Once I reached the second episode, I started to understand the tone of the show a lot more. I don't like Seth MacFarlane's shows, and I don't think his humour translates well in live-action, but there is just too much about The Orville to love for that to stop me from watching it.

The cast is pretty diverse, the women are fantastic and treated as equal for the most part (there is an all-male species that view women as inferior, but they are fought on that), there is a "gay" (in quotations because a single-gendered species don't really have those orientations) couple that is never played for laughs. I really love it a lot, it's really refreshing. Especially amongst all of these gritty ass Netflix/HBO shows that are oversaturated imo.

The Orville is a breath of fresh air. I hope anyone who gives it a chance watches passed the Pilot episode.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-05 08:25 am (UTC)(link)
The Pilot was a bit silly, but after seeing the the last two episodes, it really is becoming clear what kind of show this is supposed to be. The silliness is very toned down and the fourth episode especially felt like Star Trek to me. Well, Brannon Braga is an executive producer, so that's not so strange (yeah I know people call him the man who killed Star Trek, but anyway). And there are rumors of Patrick Stewart and plenty of other Trek actors popping up in the show, so that makes me happy and excited about The Orville.

The characters are likeable, for the most part. Like, there's this alien girl (who reminds me of B'elanna) whose species posses super strength and that's kinda cool because she's sooo tiny and cute but she kicks ass. And there's an alien whose species is an all-male species, he has a partner and they had a baby together, it's not played for laughs or anything, it just -is-, they're like any other married couple. I didn't expect to like this show, but I gave it a chance and it only gets better with each episode. I know it's not Star Trek, but it's damn close.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-05 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
A big "yikes!" to Brannon Braga being involved. Think I'd better skip this one.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-05 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
I could have almost written this, OP (except that I enjoy most of Seth MacFarlane's work). This is my favorite Star Trek thing since Voyager. While I enjoy the first and third movies of nuTrek, they just don't feel like Star Trek to me. Haven't gotten around to Discovery yet (I'm hesitant to watch the pilot when I'm not going to pay for the rest), but The Orville fills the void fantastically. It's as if he's doing the Star Trek that my family would do - a mix of serious Trek and smartassery.

I loooove The Orville, I'm watching it right now. I didn't think I would love it so much, but the women are great.
