Fic Allergies

(Anonymous) 2017-10-04 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Which specific irritants make you back button from a fic (besides crappy grammar)?

Which can you tolerate?

Whenever I'm reading a fix that has dog/wolf associations (like werewolves, or dog demons, w/e), if someone refers to the children as "pups", I some times want to blow a gasket. It's incredibly irritating and I don't know why. Especially if the children are fully human/are not canonical children of the character. Bonus of the kid calls them mama/poppa when in the show the character is clearly too old to be acting like a baby.

Re: Fic Allergies

(Anonymous) 2017-10-04 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh, older kids and adults say mama and papa.

Re: Fic Allergies

(Anonymous) 2017-10-04 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I should clarify -- the speech patterns and behavior of the kid has been altered to have them be more of a "baby" (i.e. something the kid could do in Canon can not be done because the kid is made to be reliant on the adoptive MCs -- no this 10 year old does not need you to tie his shoe, and he back talks in Canon and would not call you Mom, if anything Sis)

Yup, agreed. First person just doesn't work for me.

It's so disappointing to see a summary and tags that check every box and then... first person.

Brrrr.

What if a canon series is written that way, like Animorphs?

Re: Fic Allergies

(Anonymous) 2017-10-04 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Pet names and shortened names that are never used in canon.

I've lucked out and never ended up in a fandom where this was at all common. But oh man, it's the worst.

Non Canon pet names make me cringe.... I might believe some nicknames, but OOC petnames ughhh

YES. I had to back out of an Enterprise fix that kept having people refer to Malcolm as "Mal."

Genericized versions of characters.

Yeah, what's the point?

Re: Fic Allergies

(Anonymous) 2017-10-05 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
examples?

My main OTP is Johnlock, and I can't stand when Sherlock is characterized as a Dark Fuck Prince. Basically, when he's characterized as a dark, possessive asshole who's always in control, and always a major top. Nope, no thanks!

In general, I hate that kind of characterization in pretty much all my pairings.

In X-Files fic, if Scully called Mulder "Fox" it was usually an instant back button. Or if Mulder called Scully "Dana" on more than the rare occasion. Or if they switched to calling each other by their first names after having sex for the first time, also an instant back button.

I backbutton on creepy morality where the author didn't seem to think it was creepy. We're talking "justifying slavery" levels of what-the-fuck. Also anything to do with diapers or incontinence. Most other stuff, like casual misogyny or massive OOC, I've read all the way through at least once in my life.

First person.

Porny fic that has decent prose and dialogue outside of sex but the moment sex happens the characters start talking like they're in a skeezy porno.

Pet-names or nicknames that aren't ever used in the canon but are everywhere in the fic.

Fic that's a wall of text, no paragraph breaks, nothing.

Re: Fic Allergies

(Anonymous) 2017-10-05 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Out of Character. That just... makes me backbutton so hard.

Re: Fic Allergies

(Anonymous) 2017-10-05 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Backbutton:

* Crappy plot summary. Yep, writing a good summary is hard. So us writing a good fic. If you're not capable of doing one, then I doubt you can do the other. If you're simply not willing to TRY and write a decent summary, then that doesn't bode well for the rest of the fic.

* Out of character dialogue or other actions. I'm not here to read a story about some completely unrecognizable people who happen to have the same names as my favorite characters, I'm here to read about my favorite characters.

* Clichéd AUs. High school is an instant back button. Ditto coffee shop. I might give bookstore a try if the writing seems OK in the first chapter but honestly, that's pretty iffy as well.

* Using present tense. Second person POV. First person POV us also doubtful unless your first few sentences are goddamn amazing.

* Anything that makes me suspect that the scene I'm reading is actually a dream one of the characters is having.

* Really obvious historical anachronisms/errors or glaringly anachronistic speech.

AU clichés like highschool, coffee shop, flower shop - basically any fic that totally transplants the characters out of the setting into a generic Modern AU setting. Removing characters from their setting often robs them of most of the context that makes them interesting.

Character/Reader fic - the idea of a fic where a character is talking to me creeps me out. I read fic to read about fictional characters interacting with each other. I am not part of the story, I am an observer.

Fics that automatically presume a concept, even if it's one I like. This is something I have run across in Harry/Hermione fics, where that pairing is so instantly presumed and there is not real development.

A long time allergy I have is any concept that links two people basically causes them to fall in love by chemical or magical effects. Some of the prime examples of such concept is a soulbond happens and practically instantly the soulbonded couple are In Love, or stuff like sex pollen of love potions.

This is grammar but because it annoys me so much: Switching tenses. If the story is great otherwise and the author just switched once and then stays in the new tense, I might make an exception, but any more than once is a guaranteed backbutton for me.

Using words that don't have a meaning in the fandom universe. Like using geographically or historically coined terms in a Fantasy or Sci-Fi world where those places/historical contexts don't exist and wouldn't make sense (I've actually seen this in published fiction a lot as well.)

Bad research. Not for small thing, but if people write, for example, a Japanese highschool like an American one with all the silly tropes neatly in place, that's annoying.

As others have said, pet names that are OOC and/or never used in canon. Same goes for taking a pet name/joke from the canon and repeating it ad nauseam.

Characters being used as author mouthpieces and for soapbox-preaching. Especially if the character wouldn't give a flying fuck about the topic the author makes them preach about.

Issue fic.

I actually like present tense if it fits the story. Some types of fic don't work with anything else and it can be a great stylistic choice if used properly.
First person, I'm not too keen on, but it depends. I personally prefer fic to not be from the POV of my favourite character, because it's so much easier to write them OOC that way.

If a character over the age of 16 is talked about as if they were a small child.

Like I just don't see Shiro angsting about the fact that if they weren't in space-war all the other Paladins would be home on earth playing hopscotch and jumping rope and playing marbles. Or that Lance is too much of a wee smol soft boi to get 'that's what she said' jokes because they're so uwu sexual. Last time I was playing Pokemon Go in the park there were boys that couldn't have been ten years old attempting to make 'that's what she said' jokes. They weren't doing it WELL, but they were aware of the concept.

If I encounter that, I assume it's just an author being pissy about people shipping her uwuwuwuwuwu sopht bois
