Exactly. And this is where Death Note went wrong, for me anyway. The moment Light went "I will be god" the story lost all the moral ambiguity it might have had and it stopped being interesting. Because yeah, we can argue about the efficiency of judiciary systems, capital punishment, whether it is right or wrong for someone to do what Light did, or whatever, but once the character snaps, develops a god complex and envisions a brave new world where everyone is completely at his mercy, the debate is over.

And yet there are still people who wish he'd won. Wtf. (Sure, most of them are just people who think they're hardcore for supporting Light, and may grow out of it sooner or later, but still.)

Haha, I'm weirdddd, but I never went into Death Note expecting there to be moral ambiguity. Sure, I still felt for Light, and was sad and wanted to see what happen. But it wasn't because I was thinking "but which of them is right!" or that it was closely balanced. Light got a hold of power that no person is meant to have, and it drove him insane. He was bright, and a regular person before that, and had good (or at least mostly-decent) intentions at the start. It was sad, seeing him destroy himself, and even if he deserved it by the end, it was sad that he deserved it.

It's why he's the main character, I think, and why I can understand how his death could hit people harder than L's- L was the good guy, but the antagonist of the story, and not the story's focus. He was not tearing himself down; he was doing his job, he knew it was dangerous, and his own death was a bitter loss and very sad, but it was not as horrible, psychologically, as Light's slide from a normal kid to the twisted person he became by the end of things.

No debate, Light was fucked up and he was very much the bad guy. But the story to me was less about the epic struggle between the good guys and the bad guys, or any moral ambiguity, and more following a person on their slide into madness, self-destruction, and death. I'm glad he didn't win, and he deserved what he got, but no one deserves to get so messed up that they get to the point where they deserve that. If that makes sense. XD;
