How many sets of bedsheets do you have?

(Anonymous) 2017-10-18 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
I'm getting ready to put new sheets on my bed, and got to thinking. Since I've lived on my own, I've had four. The original ones have gotten really worn out and some have gotten holes in them, so I decided it's time for new ones. I got two new sets a few months ago and am thinking I probably need another two, but I'm not sure what the normal number is?

How many do you guys have?

I've got five sets but I only really cycle through two. I just don't like the other three as much for no reason I can really put a finger on? IDEK.

My partner has a digestive condition, so I always have enough that there is a clean set on hand at all times. That was three sets but now we have a tumble dryer it's two and a spare undersheet.

Don't know if it makes a difference but I'm in Europe so we have a duvet and covers, not sheets or a quilt.

What do you mean by covers?

Here (at least where I live), there's a fitted sheet (has elastic corners) that goes directly on the mattress, then a flat sheet (no elastic), then a heavier blanket of some type on top (duvet, quilt, whatever, they basically serve the same purpose). How do you do it there?

I'm just curious whether you use different words for the same basic things, or if you actually do it differently.

So we have a fitted undersheet too and then a duvet that goes on top, with a cover for the duvet. Don't know if what we call a duvet is different to what you call a duvet- it's like a much thicker version of a quilt I guess? The cover is kind of like a giant pillowcase for it that gets changed weekly with the rest of the bedding.

So my wash load is pillowcases, duvet cover and undersheet.

Well, technically we (I and most people I know) call it a comforter, but I know duvet is a different word for the same thing (at least here, maybe it's different there?). But yeah, it's heavier/thicker. Quilts don't necessarily have a set thickness, though, at least not where I'm from. Also, here (and this might be regional, not necessarily all of the US) "quilt" refers to a certain style, with squares of different fabric sewn together, especially handmade (not sure if that's what you're talking about). Other types (like thinner/lighter ones with one continuous type of fabric) are just blankets. And we have duvet covers here too, but I think they're probably not as common as they are there. I use the flat sheet for pretty much the same purpose, though, it goes between the duvet/comforter and me. So when I wash, I do the fitted sheet, the flat sheet and pillowcases.

Anyway, it's interesting to know how things are done in different places!

It is really interesting! Thanks for explaining a bit more what you use there.

Oddly enough I think the UK used to have the same set up as standard- my Nan and her generation have the same type of sheets/quilts and not duvets. Then for some reason between their generation and my parent's there was a huge nationwide cultural shift to duvets. No idea why and never really thought about it much until today.

Anyway, thanks for sharing. :)

In the US, in my experience, we call a duvet a comforter. We use covers for them, too, because it's easier to wask a cover than the whole thing.

Weirdly, the covers are usually called "duvet covers" even though what they cover is still called a comforter. That's actually how they are labeled in stores: comforters and duvet covers to cover the comforters. (As a kid, we called them comforter covers in my family, but that might have just been what my parents called them.)

Quilts are a different animal. You wouldn't call a comforter/duvet a "quilt."

No it's not really a quilt here either, I just couldn't think of a better description. :) Sounds like comforter is the analogy I wanted?

This is weirdly fascinating. Just day to day stuff that you never think about but is so dependent on what you grew up with.

I have one set that I wash every other week.

Same here. I mean I guess I technically have a second set but I've never taken them out of the bags. They're there just in case of an emergency.

Man, I always think "you weren't actually poor growing up, your dad just wouldn't let your mom or you spend money on 'non-essentials,'" and then I read something like this and realize some people don't feel like greedy capitalist pigs the first time they buy another set of sheets so they can switch out the one they're washing instead of having to wait until it dries and put it back. I feel this way about shoes, too, but there's plenty of stuff I buy without a second thought, and I buy sheets from thrift stores for costume mockups whenever I need cheap cotton fabric. Brains are weird.

One set per bed as there isn't enough room in the cupboard to store extra.

Me and my partner have four, I think? I get tempted to buy more every time we go shopping, even when they don't need replacing, just because some of the designs are so gorgeous. But double sets ain't cheap. :(

Four sets (I just got rid of the most worn bedsheets).

Re: How many sets of bedsheets do you have?

(Anonymous) 2017-10-18 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Three, but I really only use two (the two nicer sets) and rotate between, changing the sheets on Fridays and washing the dirty set over the week. The third set was a gift, but they aren't as nice as the two I already had, so those are the emergency sheets that I can bring out if both good sets wind up in the laundry at once.

Technically, I have more sheets than that, but they don't fit my bed. I have a set for the futon for when I have guests, and two sets from my old twin bed I hung onto for sewing or rags (too threadbare and sweat-stained to give away).

Two flannel for winter, and two summer.

Three.

Washing is done every two weeks, I change the sheets every week, so while two are in the wash the other one is on the bed.

Five total, but I'm about to toss one because it passed "threadbare" about three washes ago, haha. Two jersey knit sets, two flannel, and a basic cotton.

I think about three. Black, turquoise and aubergine (dark purple).

Sets I currently own: 5

Sets I actually use: 3

Mine's an interesting situation. My younger brother is developmentally disabled, and gets upset whenever his sheets look "dirty". Both of us siblings have our father's sweat glands that turn everything yellow. So when my brother "needs" new sheets, they're still perfectly usable, and good quality (since there's not much to spend his money on).

So my Mom passes them to me. Then I use them until they disintegrate. So I'm getting a nice little stockpile. ^_^;;
