On the one hand, yes. On the other... For five or however many weeks we're rooting for them to finally fuck off, because the show is supposed to be about design, not drama, but now there's nothing to be emotionally invested in with PR. The talent pool is not great, there is exactly one outstanding designer, except having seen the finale collections I can't even get excited about him. On everyone else the judges' opinions this season are deeply incomprehensible. Brandon's one-note aesthetic has overstayed it's welcome, Kenya is frustrating because she's lovely but hasn't made anything beautiful, Ayana just hasn't got the taste to work with large amounts of different textiles the way she likes to: her looks are always a weird jumble, and Margarita's villain edit feels unfair and I want to like her, except she keeps saying these things and making mediocre clothes.
I don't know what it is, maybe the show is being weird because everyone is uncomfortable with the diversity angle after all and don't quite know how to handle it. But this is the worst season, worse than 14.
FWIW I'm willing to forgive their stumbling attempts to make a diverse show but I'm not gonna pretend it's fun to watch.

Though I feel like there's other attempts at diversity too. I didn't see any of the ads for this season, but I heard that outside of the show proper some designers were being positioned as explicitly non-gendernormative. I'm not gonna argue that Ayana is any kind of "diversity hire", but she does bring an unexplored demographic to the show. All of that are good things but fashion is an industry that could be argued to be inherently about normativity and convincing people of the need to fit into a certain mold. So you could see where some of their awkwardness around trying to be respectful comes from. That's obviously not a criticism of the show trying to do right.

Yeah, they actually grouped up the designers based on background in the first episode, and there were four genderfluid ones, though I'm not sure they used that word. Most of them got kicked off early.

I thought Ayana was chosen pretty much for being Muslim, but I've been pleasantly surprised by her talent.

That's so weird, I haven't really liked any of her fashion. The textiles rarely look harmonious together and the hijab is ALWAYS the odd thing out in her outfits, like a poorly considered addition. It's not a great representation of modest fashion IMO, because it literally looks like the bad stereotype that people picture of just throwing on whatever for the sake of covering up.
Though I can see how maybe this is my European-colonized taste speaking, and these things are different to people who grew up with another aesthetic sensibility. And she really can construct a good top.
