how about not getting all defensive and butt hurt over it, sitting back and thinking about it and trying to replace bad ideas with better ones?

although it is easier to just be insulted and outraged over everything under the sun and scream at the top of their voice until they are spewing spittle on everyone else.

except that it happens. a lot. and it does nothing to ensure the issues are taken seriously.

and you proved my point. I wasn't referring to you or even the people in the conversation as screaming and spewing spittle, but you chose to interpret it as such.

In other words:

Watch your tone.

Go into local politics. Address the needs of women in your community. Volunteer at a domestic violence shelter. If you have kids, raise them to where they understand that they do not have to conform to a specific gender role. Teach them to respect others. Participate in programs like Take Back the Night to combat sexual violence and rape. When people make sexist statement, call them on it. Don't be afraid but don't be aggressive to the point you are confrontational when you discuss sexism and gender issues.

The way I look at it, a gender-equitable society wouldn't produce entertainment laden with sexism. So there's no point in preaching to the choir about how OMG SEXIST some anime is. It's not going to change whether or not I like the show and it's likely to get people to write you off completely in your concerns.

Not to mention that anime is made in Japan where they have different values and gender roles for men and women.

so no one is allowed to talk about it if they can't change it?

seriously I agree with you, but you are coming across as taking this whole shit WAY too personally. did metafandom kill your dad as a child or something? geez.

I would think that alligatorade is taking this shit WAY too personally too but I don't see you calling her on the carpet about it.

When people make sexist statement, call them on it.

Except when they do it on TV, because that just reflects society so it's silly to address it? And how, exactly, are you supposed to raise your kids to understand that they do not have to conform to a specific gender roles when it's completely wrong and pointless to tell them that gender roles we see in media are horribly stereotypical and sexist? Or is it okay to talk to children about this and wrong to have conversations about it with other adults? You've already explained how wrong you feel it is to cover it in women's studies classes, so I won't bother asking about that.

I'm not even going to bother with your ridiculous "watch your tone" statment, though you might benefit from reading [livejournal.com profile] zvi_likes_tv's posts on the subject. You would probably also benefit from considering, just for a moment, that many of the people who object to sexism in media are also involved in many of the "real-life" feminist activities you so pompously suggest, but since elsewhere in the post you present statistics you clearly pulled out of your ass, I'm afraid that may be beyond you.

Maybe you're not capable of caring about sexism in the media and sexism in RL (or apparently, of understanding just how closely those two things feed off each other -- did you go to a terrible school or were you just to busy being pissed off about the stupid women who wanted to talk about sexism in your classes to pay attention?), but many other people are not.

Moron.

That was sort of the point of the secret-- I can do that AND take umbrage when I see something sexist and/or racist and/or classist and/or homophobic on my television screen because what I see on my television screen is both a symptom and cause for those other things. My caring is not a zero-sum game. I can do many things to change the world at once.

Anyone who uses the television to dictate how they should behave in society is in serious need of 'getting a life'. Why is the 'boobtube' given such weight and credence these days? THAT'S what needs to be addressed.

It needs to be addressed but misinformation is easier to counter when the source is placed in perspective, not for us but for those that DO use it as a sexist/racist/classist/homophobic soapbox.

Sadly for many people in the world, it is their only source of brain food and don't/won't realize it's flaws. We, as a whole, aren't encouraged to think for ourselves anymore.
