Oh, so just because it doesn't affect you negatively and you find some of it hot, that means that a person doesn't have the right to express their dislike for it?

The impression I get from the secret is that the OP doesn't really care what you get off on, s/he is just sick of hearing people clamour to hir about how great it is/possibly trying to cow hir into reading it, and is expressing frustration over it in an appropriate venue. The internet is a big place and yes, it is easy to avoid crap, but it's also very easy (in fandom) to run into very forceful and obnoxious people - and sometimes they/their views are so damn frustrating you've gotta let it out somewhere.

I used to have a friend who *would NOT shut up* about slash to me - no matter how many times I told her that I just wasn't that into it. I humored her with some slashy roleplay sessions, and there are characters I didn't mind seeing slashed in fic, but I made it extremely clear to her that I was never going to be as "into" it as much as she was, nor into all the same couples she was into. Thanks to her, I won't even give most slash stuff a chance anymore. Aversion therapy, because this person would just not listen to me when I told her to "shut up already."

By the tone of the secret, I'm guessing the OP is having similar problems with friends and aquaintences? It's gotta come out somewhere.

I've often said that, on the Internet, there is *nothing* people get more defensive over than their porn. Enjoy it and be happy, but please, please understand that not everybody likes it, and that not everybody will, and furthermore, that some of us who dislike it KNOW that other people have the right to like it and are just frustrated with some of our friends and general fandom circles. It may strike you as "persecution complex" but some people just reach a threshold of annoyance, and persecution complexes go *both* ways sometimes. I honestly don't think the OP's out to stop anyone's fun.

First of all, as I said in my comment, all that I said was to help HER, not to be mean. I said she should avoid that stuff because it's pointless to get sad/upset over. Kind of like when you tell little kids they should ignore people who tease them at school - the act(the teasing) isn't right, you gotta do what you can do.

As a yaoi fan, I need to say:

Obnoxious behavior != (aka =/= ) labeling your fic "non-con". She's bothered, from what I understand from her replies to the comments that I read afterward, is not that the porn exists but rather that it is named "non-con" as if non-consensual is "OK" and/or more acceptable than rape.

Your weird friends and their excessive fangirling is obviously not just LABELING their own fic AS WELL AS THEY DAMN WELL PLEASE. I mean, unless you go out of your way to let people know about it, just labeling your fic non-con is about as obnoxious as making random RL posts on your LJ.

Your friend would not shut up - aka she IMed you, emailed you, talked to you or whatever, depending on whether she was a RL friend or not. That means she interacted with you. The OP is bashing on people who're just labeling their own fics on their own sites/ljs and not IMing the crap out of her.

I understand your point, but I really think you're reading too much into it.

Still, some people are pissed that stuff exists and will express that. That's what happens on the Internet and they're as easy to ignore as anyone else. I mean, I'm pissed off that stupid drivers exist, but there's nothing I can do about it - so I'll bitch in my LJ from time to time. I can't make anyone go to driving school, and I'm not about to make anyone exist, but am I annoyed that bad road behavior exists? Yep.

Then again, fandom is different than real life in that people tend to think not liking my kink=judging me as a person. Sometimes it is, but I'm willing to bet that most of the time, it's not.

I wish a *lot* of things didn't exist in fandom, myself, but, I'm just too lazy and not-wanting-to-hear the wank to submit any secrets myself.

This is just proof. Unless one's "secret" is "I'd hit it!" or "I ship it!" someone's gonna complain and treat them like they're horrible for it.

Er, *not exist... not about to make anyone not exist. The typo is strong with me today.

Yeah. I borrowed a bunch of the comics from a friend and I just had to scan and color that panel.

The Tick = <3

Not to burst your bubble but I think those secrets get a lot of wank too. The whole "GET ORIGINAL" or "YOU'RE A GIRL YOU NEED TO SHLICK NOT FAP" etc etc.

Fandom = wank. At least fandom!secrets is.

And actually, to be perfectly honest I think you read too much into it. You assumed she had all those friends bothering her etc. I think she just wanted people to stop "misusing" a term. And I told her to avoid it since it's not worth it.

I do agree about the cab drivers etc though, obviously.

Well, I did kind of assume/get the impression that she was being actively bothered by people when she said "If you get off to it, fine.... but shut the fuck UP about it!"

(Having actually written a horor fic involving rape once, emotional scars, it wasn't pretty nor was it meant to be "porn," etc.) I (personally) find the idea of fantasy-kink style, rape-turned-romance stuff pretty, well, stomach-churning to put it bluntly, but I've found it easy enough to avoid.

I haven't even encountered fics that were "Let's have this character raped as punishment because we hate him/her" - that strikes me as the "Let's kill the character in many horrendous ways because we hate him/her"-the next level. That idea strikes me more as "immaturity" than necessiarly "sickness," but I would still back away pretty quick from an author who did that sort of thing.
