What happened between him and Samuel L. Jackson?

So, what... Jackson is complaining that Brits are better trained and ask for less money?

He's complaining about cheap immigrant labour taking his people's jobs?

Okay. Well, it's an opinion.

But given the number of put-downs in Jackson's text (they only *think* they're better trained etc.) I'm kind of with Boyega on this one: "A stupid ass conflict."

You missed every single one of SLJ's points. Impressive.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-25 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't mention the bit where he has no faith in a trained actor to, like, portray something he hasn't directly experienced.

No! You must be sufficiently traumatised in a *particular kind of way* or your portrayal *just won't be good enough*.

SLJ was an ass, if an eloquent and charming one.

If you want to change my mind, you're going to have be more specific than "you missed his points."

Sweetie.

Wow, even more missing the point! You're on a roll!

You imagined "the bit where he has no faith in a trained actor to, like, portray something he hasn't directly experienced." Jackson did not put down Daniel Kaluuya or David Oyelowo. He was wondering if African-American actors would bring something different to the roles. It was speculation, not hate. Think of it kind of like fancasting, or seeing what Edward Norton and Mark Ruffalo have done with the same role of the Hulk in the MCU.

When one of the hosts asked him why he thought there were so many black British actors in Hollywood, Jackson said they're cheaper because those actors are generally less established in Hollywood and they're eager to get over here because there are more opportunities to work. So they "ask for less money" because they can't command more money. He also said that the casting agents and directors (that's who "they" referred to, not black British actors) have a bias for classically trained actors, which...classically trained =/= "better". It's just one way of learning how to act.

Let me know if you need more help, sweetie.

Apparently, SLJ commented on the fact that a British actor played the lead in Get Out, and he wondered how an American actor would handle it since race relations are different in the two countries with different histories. John tweeted that that was a stupid thing to say and we didn't have time for that argument.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-25 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
I mean... that does seem kind of dumb to say, imo? Yes race relation history is different, but the lead actor didn't write the script? I mean, he was acting in the way he was told to act, so to say an American actor would act it differently seems a weird thing to me...

(Anonymous) 2017-10-25 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
You expect an American actor to give that much credit to the writing?

(Anonymous) 2017-10-25 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
I think what SLJ said was much more critical and much less sort of idly-wondering-about-acting than you're presenting it here

(Anonymous) 2017-10-25 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe it was, I honestly know very little about what went down.

I wonder if Boyega felt sort of personally attacked.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-25 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Given his recent movie, Detroit, where he played an American and the movie was very much about race in America.

Re: I wonder if Boyega felt sort of personally attacked.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-25 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, and Detroit was roundly criticized for being a white depiction of black pain. Maybe if John Boyega was more established in Hollywood, he wouldn't have gone for the role. Or maybe he would have been in a position to have black people behind the camera as well, who would have told the story differently.
