How do you feel about Kylo and, I dunno, Kylowives? Is that a thing?

(Anonymous) 2017-10-25 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
If you don't like the guy, just say you don't like the guy. Don't invent tortured justifications about how it's actually people on Tumblr's fault that you don't like the guy.

It's pretty common for people who didn't care about a celebrity to start disliking them due to scandals or simple oversaturation.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-25 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
That is literally the only reason to start hating a character. If I watch anything without any exposure to the fandom I never hate any character, even the blatantly shitty ~problematic~ ones.

Fandom is the only thing making characters and ships hated. I don't get why that is so hard to understand. The mantra "don't hate characters because of their fans" is futile and unrealistic.

"I dislike this popular actor / character and it's all your fault." Mmkay.

I lost a bit of respect for him after the SLJ thing too TBH. I think Jackson kinda had a point.

that it's wrong for black British people to play African-Americans?

Apparently, SLJ commented on the fact that a British actor played the lead in Get Out, and he wondered how an American actor would handle it since race relations are different in the two countries with different histories. John tweeted that that was a stupid thing to say and we didn't have time for that argument.

What clash with Samuel L. Jackson? I've definitely missed something. . .

(Anonymous) 2017-10-25 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
apparently SLJ talked some shit about british actors taking american roles, and JB took offense

(Anonymous) 2017-10-25 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
SLJ said that he didn't like black British actors taking African-American roles because British racism isn't the same as American racism so a British person isn't going to be as good at the role. Which does have a point.

JB basically came back with "Why are you making this black Brits vs. black Americans?" Which also has a good point because historically, say, telling poor white Americans that if they get free health insurance then poor n****rs will also get free health insurance is the best way to get them to vote against their own interests because they'd rather be dead and racist than see black people 'looting' the healthcare system.

I love Finn but his fans (if you can even call them fans) appear to be, with stiff competition, some of the wankiest idiots in SW fandom.

+1

(Anonymous) 2017-10-25 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
+1. I lasted in Star Wars fandom all through the (terrible) prequels but now I just quietly read fic and leave polite anon comments on it. The fans are just awful - if you don't write Finn you're terrible! If you write him you're doing it wrong and you're terrible! It's not just the Finn fans but since Finn is my favourite that's who I keep running into.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-25 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
It's so sad that this is so true.

I think Finn and John are super charming and wonderful but I still know what you mean. Like, Finn is not going to be the center of all promo material. It's an ensemble movie with a huge fictional universe and a lot of fans to please.

It feels very performative. Paired with all the vicious Kylo-hate it just makes them look like an insincere assholes. I acknowledge there are racist elements to how Finn is portrayed in promo materials and fandom. I don't think what they're doing is an effective antidote though.

John Boyega's response wasn't terribly polite, but IMO, SLJ's remarks were far worse and I can understand Boyega's response. Where SLJ went wrong was that he strongly implies that the actor in question (Daniel Kaluuya) wouldn't understand about racial tensions and racism because he's not American. I mean... wow. That's incredibly ignorant on so many levels.

Later, SLJ claims he was criticizing the way Hollywood works. Well, that's kind of BS, because if you mean to criticize how casting works, why call out the actor? The actor isn't the one who decided to cast himself in the role. Is he supposed to give up a job because he's not American? When SLJ was cast as Mace Windu, did he think "Oh wait, I know nothing about being a space knight who fights with laser swords" and maybe the role should go to someone who "really feels that"? Of course not. Because pretending to be something you're not is kind of the point in an actor's career.

Was Boyega rude? Yep. Was he wrong to try and shut down a conversation someone else was having? Yep. But you know, I bet he didn't like being told in not so many words that black people in the UK have no trouble with racism and therefore wouldn't know what it's like. And I don't blame him one bit.

I don't understand why some people think fandoms cannot ruin a character for some people. From my experience fandoms are the ONLY thing that can ruin a character for you.

The obsessiveness, the entitlement, the hate/competitiveness towards other characters, and the fucking shippers. Is it really a surprise fandom turns people sour to characters? Even characters I've been huge fans of have been ruined by fandom.

The only remedy is avoiding fandom for extended periods. When you can form your own opinions and impression on characters it's easier to like them. Thousands of people converging into one fandom really shits up the water, so stay away from it if it's negatively influencing your opinions on characters.

I swear I never hate any characters when I watch something by myself. It's only when I get into fandom that it becomes annoying. Not related to SW but I always get annoyed when some side-character gets obsessed over purely because fangirls find him attractive and they never shut up about it to the point it's overwhelming.
