Characters that won't kill a bad guy because then they'll totally be as bad as the bad guy.

Unfortunately there's way too many people similar to that IRL. All actions are not equal, especially when you're trying to stop someone who is bad!

Agreed. Well, it doesn't always make me hate the character/fandom if it is really good except for that, but it is a trait I hate. Okay, murder is wrong. Yes. But not all killing is murder. And if you are fighting the villain and trying to stop them from hurting more people then yes, in many/most cases it is okay to kill them, especially when there aren't other good options.

I don't hate the character, I'll hate the idiot writer instead.

No, killing the bad guy who is going around murdering people will not make the hero as bad as them, like Jesus Christ, fuck off with that idiotic bullshit. Kill the bad guy, save lives.

Even Avatar Aang, who was 12 and a pacifist monk?

Did him not killing a bad guy result in that bad guy killing dozens more?

Nope. He beat him up with magic karate and threw him in jail forever, and the world was saved!

Yes. He went looking for reassurance of his beliefs from an avatar from the Air Nation (who he assumed would be just as pacifist) and she told him to kill Ozai.

The writers needed two deus ex machinas to write their way out of Aang's pigheadedness.

They had to resort to deus ex machinas because they'd failed to lay the groundwork for this revelation like several episodes leading up to the finale. The execution was poor but I appreciate the intention. It made sense that the character would try desperately to find a third option. Just... should've done it a little earlier.

Honestly, I don't even hate the characters, I hate the writers for not being able to write better, more compelling moral dilemmas.

I can see how it could hypothetically be interesting; a character who is afraid of their potential for violence and sets strict "rules" to keep themselves in check.

But usually it's just "all murder is equally bad, so we can't have our hero kill the guy who is trying to blow up a city full of millions of people."

I actually really like those characters, the ones with a moral backbone. At least when a bad guy is defeated and there's other options to detain them.
