Characters that won't kill a bad guy because then they'll totally be as bad as the bad guy.

Unfortunately there's way too many people similar to that IRL. All actions are not equal, especially when you're trying to stop someone who is bad!

Agreed. Well, it doesn't always make me hate the character/fandom if it is really good except for that, but it is a trait I hate. Okay, murder is wrong. Yes. But not all killing is murder. And if you are fighting the villain and trying to stop them from hurting more people then yes, in many/most cases it is okay to kill them, especially when there aren't other good options.

Anti-heroes that are just jerks and don't seem to have any redeeming qualities. Actually, just in general "heroes" that are awful people and yet the creator wants us to root for.

Nice guys who we are supposed to see as progressive and decent just for being a decent human being most of the time. I'm not going to praise a character for not assaulting a drunk (or spelled) character (I'm looking at you, Xander Harris). The fact that you even though about it is not a good thing, and you don't deserve praise for doing what any normal human being should do.

Depressed villains who don't really want to be villains or just don't care about anything and are miserable. This rarely works. The only time it has really worked for me is Vader hating himself more than anything else. But most other characters like this are just annoying.

People who are constantly kind of tragic, but due to their own inaction or poor decision making, particularly if the reason they behave like that is not due to a personal motivation like greed or fear, or to some kind of personal issue like trauma or depression, but rather because they are either hidebound by tradition or they just don't seem to have the intellectual tools and wherewithal to do something, and also they never really grow much. Characters like that are beyond annoying and I want to punch them in the face.

Basically, nearly every single character in Mervyn Peake's Titus Groan.

Single-stereotyped characters. The lone "tough chick," the "typical" guy, the simply "prissy and stuck up girl," it's lazy.

Pacifist characters in stories about war. They almost always turn out to be hypocrites without the narrative being aware of it.

I hate characters who fit this trope:

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TooDumbToLive

Most of the time it's crappy writing or lazy writing - someone needs to be in danger, so they do a bunch of really stupid stuff that lands them in danger! Or a plot is very weak so the character has to be too blind to see through the trick. Haaaaaaaaate that.

Asshole characters that aren't treated as such by the narrative in that you're actually supposed to root for them or are treated as 'heroes' despite the fact that they keep doing the same jerkish actions over and over and none of the other characters seem to care.

Have a character be a dick by all means, but don't tell me that they're the sweetest person alive when all they do is think of themselves and fuck over everyone else at any given moment.

Genius science types with no sense of personal space/other boundaries. Overly precocious kids. (A smart kid is OK, if they're kid-smart. But there's limits.) And if you combine the two...ggggg.

Characters tailor made to be another character's perfect love interest, with no motivations outside of supporting their partner.

Characters who are selfless to the point that it upsets the people they're sacrificing their happiness or wellbeing for, but who we're supposed to still view as perfect angels.

Characters who pine over another character, projecting an idealized image onto that character, and become furious when the image they've built up is interfered with in any way... but who we're expected to feel so sorry for (and who all the other characters feel sorry for) while thinking that the character they're pining for is such an asshole for being their own person.

I've said this before, but I generally dislike characters who have a lot of power and trample all over other people's wants and needs because no one is capable of stopping them. This covers a much wider variety of characters than you might think.

Ironically, I like unOrdinary, which is about an entire civilization of people like this, shitting on each other from progressively greater heights. I guess it makes a difference when the narrative actually acknowledges this is a bad thing.

When characters are always a step ahead and more superior than everyone else. I love competent characters, but if it's "always prepared for everthing and never caught off guard" every single time without failt or exception it gets annoying fast (looking at you, Bungou Stray Dogs' Dazai).

Manic Pixie Dream Girls (and the male counterpart).

Cringey comic relief characters.

There seems to be a particular flavor of libertarian science fiction hero who breaks the fourth wall to lecture the reader about why tax law, gun control, or divorce is unfair (Probability Broach, Dancing Gods, Rogue Queen).

Religious strawmen including strawatheists (Bones).

Female characters who just flip-flop between salty and thirsty with no other characterization.

Horny children. Like, wtf is up with all the little bitty kids wanting boyfriends/girlfriends in media?

Smug assholes who take way, way too long for the narrative to show them the error of their ways, if it ever does.

I hate the producers more than the characters but when you can instantly tell what's going to happen to someone based on their ethnicity or physical appearance.

They're a redhead? They're evil. British? Totally evil. Chinese? Will be slightly misguided but come round to White heroes side ultimately or be saved by him. Same with all strong female characters of all ethnicities - they'll die if they're too independent or be saved by white male hero in some way. Black male characters will be morally upstanding in some way but not able to come through as the ultimate hero. That's for the white guy. And the white guy is ultimately a misunderstood slacker.

Ugh ugh ugh. Lazy shitty story telling.

Characters who are drugged/spelled/brainwashed into doing horrible things. Mostly because 99% of the time, the narrative treats it as though their pain over the things they did is the only important pain. Anyone attempting to bring them to trial is inevitably going to be the villain, and 99.9% of the time the victims or the families of the victims are treated as wrong if they don't immediately forgive the character for what happened.

It's even worse if the victim and the brainwashed character are both significant characters, because there will typically be an arc where the victim has to realize how wrong they are to still be upset/angry/afraid, and look how sorry he is, you need to forgive him now - or even worse, the victim will go completely off the rails and try to murder the brainwashed character, because god forbid we take a nuanced approach that doesn't frame any reaction other than forgiveness as evil.

It's particularly frustrating because it's something that could be interesting if done well, and it almost never is.
