What fictional character types do you hate?

Unfortunately there's way too many people similar to that IRL. All actions are not equal, especially when you're trying to stop someone who is bad!

Nice guys who we are supposed to see as progressive and decent just for being a decent human being most of the time. I'm not going to praise a character for not assaulting a drunk (or spelled) character (I'm looking at you, Xander Harris). The fact that you even though about it is not a good thing, and you don't deserve praise for doing what any normal human being should do.
Depressed villains who don't really want to be villains or just don't care about anything and are miserable. This rarely works. The only time it has really worked for me is Vader hating himself more than anything else. But most other characters like this are just annoying.

Most of the time it's crappy writing or lazy writing - someone needs to be in danger, so they do a bunch of really stupid stuff that lands them in danger! Or a plot is very weak so the character has to be too blind to see through the trick. Haaaaaaaaate that.

Have a character be a dick by all means, but don't tell me that they're the sweetest person alive when all they do is think of themselves and fuck over everyone else at any given moment.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-28 12:40 am (UTC)(link)Characters who are selfless to the point that it upsets the people they're sacrificing their happiness or wellbeing for, but who we're supposed to still view as perfect angels.
Characters who pine over another character, projecting an idealized image onto that character, and become furious when the image they've built up is interfered with in any way... but who we're expected to feel so sorry for (and who all the other characters feel sorry for) while thinking that the character they're pining for is such an asshole for being their own person.

Ironically, I like unOrdinary, which is about an entire civilization of people like this, shitting on each other from progressively greater heights. I guess it makes a difference when the narrative actually acknowledges this is a bad thing.
Re: What fictional character types do you hate?
Manic Pixie Dream Girls (and the male counterpart).
Cringey comic relief characters.

Religious strawmen including strawatheists (Bones).

(Anonymous) 2017-10-28 01:26 am (UTC)(link)Horny children. Like, wtf is up with all the little bitty kids wanting boyfriends/girlfriends in media?
Smug assholes who take way, way too long for the narrative to show them the error of their ways, if it ever does.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-28 06:50 am (UTC)(link)They're a redhead? They're evil. British? Totally evil. Chinese? Will be slightly misguided but come round to White heroes side ultimately or be saved by him. Same with all strong female characters of all ethnicities - they'll die if they're too independent or be saved by white male hero in some way. Black male characters will be morally upstanding in some way but not able to come through as the ultimate hero. That's for the white guy. And the white guy is ultimately a misunderstood slacker.
Ugh ugh ugh. Lazy shitty story telling.
Re: What fictional character types do you hate?
(Anonymous) 2017-10-28 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)It's even worse if the victim and the brainwashed character are both significant characters, because there will typically be an arc where the victim has to realize how wrong they are to still be upset/angry/afraid, and look how sorry he is, you need to forgive him now - or even worse, the victim will go completely off the rails and try to murder the brainwashed character, because god forbid we take a nuanced approach that doesn't frame any reaction other than forgiveness as evil.
It's particularly frustrating because it's something that could be interesting if done well, and it almost never is.
