Characters tailor made to be another character's perfect love interest, with no motivations outside of supporting their partner.

Characters who are selfless to the point that it upsets the people they're sacrificing their happiness or wellbeing for, but who we're supposed to still view as perfect angels.

Characters who pine over another character, projecting an idealized image onto that character, and become furious when the image they've built up is interfered with in any way... but who we're expected to feel so sorry for (and who all the other characters feel sorry for) while thinking that the character they're pining for is such an asshole for being their own person.

I have a feeling you'll appreciate Limyaael: http://limyaael.livejournal.com/377262.html

"This is not a person. This is a stock character. It’s giving the protagonist the equivalent of a cuddly toy bear, except that this cuddly toy bear also can talk back and looks human and is a most willing fuck."

(I also wonder what you'd make of a certain character in The Golden Oecumene, unnamed due to spoilers. Long story short, she was created to be another character's perfect love interest, but in the most backhanded and vengeful way possible, as a final insult from her creator before leaving forever. Her existence is literally a sick joke.)

AYRT

That post was a good read, thanks!

I'm unfamiliar with that canon you mention, but just based on your description, I don't think I'd be particularly annoyed by that character. The problem with designated love interests for me is that they don't enrich the story, they're flat non-characters who are just there as a reward for the protagonist or because the author feels obliged to include some kind of romance. It cheapens the narrative, brings the whole story down. If it's a plot point that someone is just a blandly perfect LI, then they're not just a blandly perfect LI. There's potential for them to get an actual storyline and actual character development, which would 1) actually enrich the story and 2) make them something resembling a fully realized character.

For the second one, you should try xxxHOLIC. CLAMP loves doing subtle critique of that character archetype but in xxxHOLIC they just go 'screw it'. It's quite satisfying
