Regarding your first point: this is why I dislike almost every fictional character who's modeled on David Xanatos. Van Kleiss in Generator Rex is a particularly terrible example of the type, while Vlad Masters in Danny Phantom pleasantly subverts it by being much less intelligent, charismatic, and competent than he thinks he is.

Curiously, it often annoys me a bit more in heroes/"good guys" than in villains - probably because the villains usually go down eventually. For villains, the "can't even win a single time but keeps coming back" gets a little grating for my tastes, too.

I think my main issue is: as soon as a character trope makes one side look too superior and by extension the opposing side kind of pathetic, dumb or OTT weak, it gets boring because things are too out of balance and it usually takes ridiculous power ups to level the field again.
