Older (even elderly) guys who are genuinely nice and don't spend all their time complaining that the world isn't like it used to be. (Being secretly badass is a plus but not absolutely necessary.)

Older badass guys are great. I especially love them as mentor figures who seem harmless at first but turn out to be extremely badass and someone you don't want to mess with.

Thirded. Strago in FFVI made a big impression on me, not so much for the character himself as for the realization that even a JRPG could have an old guy as a hero.
