Corpse Bride definitely has more mainstream appeal and less reliance on spectacle than The Nightmare Before Christmas. But it's a toss-up on what the bigger cliche is -- the actual plot, or the Burton-Depp-HBC trifecta, and it makes the movie feel lazy.

Funny you say that, as I felt something like the opposite-- that even more than NBC, Corpse Bride was built around a few big scenes (the resurrection of Emily, the "Remains of the Day" number) and the script was just sort of hashed together to get you from one to the other (that the original folk tale Corpse Bride is based on is about a paragraph long doesn't help).

Then again, scripts have never, ever been Burton's strong point.

Honestly I dislike both of them. I couldn't even tell you which one I think is better because they both bored me to tears.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-29 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. (not being into Tim Burton's cutesy goth aesthetic probably doesn't help either)

Yeah, same. I think Nightmare is a bit more memorable, but my reaction to both is basically "meh".

(Anonymous) 2017-10-29 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Congratulations on your shit taste then.

Nightmare Before Christmas definitely has the best music.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-29 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
+1

Yeah, Corpse Bride's music was mostly crap. I only liked the piano duet, tbh. The opening song was okay, too.

I like Corpse Bride better too, because I hate all the "Let's save Christmas!!" tropes.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-29 06:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously, mate. If you've seen one "Military shoots rogue Santa out of the sky" flick, you've seen 'em all.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-29 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I like both of them, but I'll always be partial to 'Nightmare' largely 'cause that was one of my favorite movies when I was a kid :).

(Anonymous) 2017-10-29 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I hated all the jokes in Corpse Bride and can't remember a single song from it, so no, I have no idea what you're talking about OP.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-29 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I like them both for different reasons, to be honest.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-29 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I watched Corpse Bride once and barely remember it, but I remember being pissed that it was a romance movie with a love triangle where the main interactions throughout the whole movie are the guy and the girl who isn't endgame. I'm not a huge fan of romance at all, but that's a particularly bad execution.

Technically speaking, Nightmare is the better film.

I just like Corpse Bride three times more.

I like Corpse Bride more as well.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-29 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Nightmare is just more colorful and imaginative, imo. I don't think the world of the dead was particularly interesting in Corpse Bride at all. The bride herself was kind of interesting, but I hated the voice acting for the main guy (I think it's Johnny Depp, isn't it?). Corpse Bride's music also was much weaker.

But Corpse Bride did have its moments, too. I liked the beginning and the ending.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-29 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I like both, but I enjoy Corpse Bride more.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-30 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Nightmare had better music, but Corpse Bride isn't without its charms...

Corpse Bride is good watching for Halloween when you've got some scare-averse viewers who still want spooky fun. Nightmare is good watching for Christmas, when you want to flash back to Halloween between all the over-cheeriness.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-30 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
I've never actually been able to stay awake through Corpse Bride. I like it? There's just something that puts me to sleep.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-30 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
It's kind of a song from your childhood that you've heard a million times before, comfortable because it's pretty and entirely predictable.
