Re: How do you feel about costume bans?
(Anonymous) 2017-10-30 08:08 am (UTC)(link)Looking at the Spirit Halloween website, what bothers me is not that there are costumes involving short skirts being marketed to tweens. What bothers me is that almost all the store's costumes marketed to tween girls were designed to be figure flattering, stereotypically feminine, and at least a little bit revealing. Out of 42 costumes for girls, only two of them involve pants. The other 40 are skirts (most of which are short skirts, whether that makes a difference or not).
That I do find fucked up. But it's nothing to do with the girls wearing those costumes, or the parents okaying it. I completely disagree that these sorts of costumes should be banned. But that doesn't mean I'm cool with big Halloween store chains selling almost nothing but these sorts of costumes to any female older than five. That genuinely is some major bullshit.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-30 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)If it helps, a lot of Walmart's kids costumes are designed more modestly.

I mean especially the first thing that comes to mind with 'costume ban' is a couple years ago when things were going around facebook encouraging kids party organizers to ban Frozen costumes to force little girls to use their imaginations and be unique. (which is especially shameful as I never saw any similar memes about the 84 Kid Batmen and 56 Kid Captain Americas that always show up ) Fucking hell, if every little girl wants to be Elsa why should she be told she can't because it's 'too popular'?
