Totally agree with this.

And all you people calling double standards? STFU. Not getting to use an offensive term indiscriminately does not make you oppressed, so stop your fucking whining. Seriously. Someone called fandom on its use of homophobic slurs, and distinguished it from the use of those terms within the gay community itself? Since when does that make him or her a troll?

Um, it is a double standard. I don't think I'm being oppressed, but going "it is absolutely NOT OKAY to say faggot EVER, unless you're gay in which case it's just hunky-dory!" is definitely a double standard.

My problem with calling it a "double standard" is the suggestion that such a term holds of "all things being equal." Double standards are rejected, generally, because they uphold an inequitable situation -- i.e. that it's wrong for you to steal my property, but right for me to steal yours. The underlying assumption, of course, is that we are on equal terms to begin with, and the double standard has made things inequitable.

The thing with terms that are sexist, homophobic, and racist is that they speak to an already inequitable situation -- a man can call me a "cunt," for example, and in so doing, he is speaking from an entire system that allows him to use this word in a derogatory manner to make me feel disempowered. Calling him a dick will never have the same force. If I want to use "cunt" as a word that my girlfriends and I use for fun, so as to reclaim it and try to take some of that power back, that's a different situation. Of course, what will happen, is that a whole bunch of men will start using it as much as possible, and then get all hurt that they can't use any word they want, and start complaining that isn't this just an example of the double standard at work? Cause privileged groups? Get butthurt real fast.

I don't think that what they're saying is inherently a double-standard, but to the extent it seems to be taken, it could easily be.

I just find it really obnoxious that someone could say that a random person they have never met over the Internet who happens to be gay could throw the word "faggot" around all they like, but if an actual friend of theirs who did not happen to be gay said it, even in an affectionate way (I know my friends interrupt my fangirling all the time with "lol you fag," especially since I do refer to it as "fagging" over a series sometimes), it's suddenly OMG OFFENSIVE.

As a quick-and-dirty way, yes, it's safe to say that if they're part of the gay community they are probably not using the word in a derogatory manner (though if a woman called me a cunt in an inflammatory way I would bitchslap her so hard... same holds true here), and if they're not there is a chance they're being insulting. But all things equal, if someone calls me a faggot or a bitch, it will entirely depend on the situation, who the person is and the context in which it's said, as to whether I get offended or not. I think saying it's offensive simply because the other person isn't gay or bi, no matter the circumstances, is pretty offensive itself.

I NEED TO NOT BE LAZY AND LOG OUT OF THIS ACCOUNT, I lack serious-face icons. B|

I guess I already read those nuances in what the OP was saying. Should a gay person be able to use "faggot" indiscriminately just because they are gay? No. However, what I thought the person was saying -- and I may be wrong -- was that the use of the word in the gay community is different than the use of the word outside that community. Which I entirely agree with. One gay person affectionately or jokingly calling another gay person a "fag" is very different than a bunch of straight people calling each other, affectionately or not, the same term.

And again, why the whining about being criticized for using a word? Some religions only allow their members to take communion; some tribal groups and societies only allow their stories and rituals to be told to and partaken of by their members; some families are o.k. with criticizing and insulting each other, but won't put up with it from others. Quite frankly, only middle-class, straight white people think that everything should be about them, and that they should have access to and full use of everything around them. That's not equality or fairness -- that's just the assumption of privilege.
