I'm a little torn but mostly leaning towards hoping it never happens. There are a few visuals that I would like, although I'm not sure if they would be the parts of the stories that would make it into a live action (like Valinor or the Two Lamps and such).

But those visuals are not enough for all the fuck-ups that will occur. And, it's bad enough that they screw up the story but then the movie becomes the definition, rather than the book. It is rare that Tolkien art of LOTR or the Hobbit isn't based off the actors in the movies. It's rare to find book!Thranduil in any fic. And so on.

It's not just the movie that bastardizes the things I love about Tolkien; it inundates all of fandom and the public consciousness too, which really makes me sad.

That is exactly why I don't want a movie or series based on my favourite books. It's practically soul crushing when you love this thing and want to share it and talk about it and revel in your love for it but everyone else fell in love with a derivation and are proudly ignorant about the original which you love so much.

It goes the other way sometimes. I was introduced to the Master and Commander books through the movie. And I like the movie fine but the books? Daaaaaaaamn they're good.

oh my god, you've elucidated my thoughts perfectly, anon. I hate the LOTR/Hobbit movies and no amount of discussion on their merits will persuade me otherwise. I think this is exactly why - that it becomes the representative of the canon in the public eye and in fandom.

Tolkien did quite a few pictures himself - he was no mean artist - and those visuals are good enough for me. The chances of getting good screen adaptations are zero, based on what's happened to date. The only good adaptations are the BBC Radio ones, and they're brilliant. Ain't broke, don't fix.

And the thought of Silm trashy merchandising makes me want to gag, especially when I consider that a lot of it was written during the Great War. It's bad enough that LoTR, which is like a memoir of Tolkien's experiences in the trenches, but written long afterwards, was turned into a generic fantasy flick.

Who's the blonde one in the far right, drawing his sword?

OP, I just want an animated series at this point.

Also, who made the art?

thanks for the lovely secret.

I'd definitely want to see a well done movie, but I know it wouldn't be and I hate that. :(

The LOTR movies weren't perfect at all, but they had things I liked. The Hobbit movies were just really weird as an adaptation, especially the fact that they stretched it into three movies when it wasn't that long. Kinda proves they were just looking to make money. And if the movies are getting progressively worse, that doesn't give me much hope.

And yeah, the movie would probably overtake the book in popularity.
