Fanfic tropes IRL

Have you ever run into one? A person or a situation or anything counts.

I didn't think people who were self-absorbed enough to complain about how they're just too popular and receiving toooo many gifts even though they urge people to stop, really they do!, were real outside of self-insert Mary Sues.

I just ran into one, and it was as gross as you'd expect.

It's not a fanfic trope exactly, but a fiction one.

Rich chaebol-linked family's asshole mom runs the household, favors her daughter over her son, gifts her things all the time and neglects him, daughter is naive and accepting, neglected son grows up to be an asshole like mom and marries asshole wife and takes over the family business then neglects asshole mom in turn in her old age, accuses naive daughter of theft and tries to cut her out of the will, giant legal battle over wills and properties

and I'm just sitting here like /popcorn.gif

I may know some people who got into a fake marriage for green card reasons and subsequently fell in love

I have a (not super close) guy friend who I genuinely believe is in love with his best male friend and has been for years. My guy friend says he's straight, but he gets people thinking he's gay all the time. Outwardly I take him at his word that he's straight and never question him on it, but inwardly, he really, really does ping my gaydar. (Is gaydar still an acceptable concept? I honestly don't know.)

Anyway, the way he talks about his guy friend is just...I mean, it's obvious that he cares about this guy, way, way more than any girl he's ever been with. Of course, it's possible they just have an epic bromance, but IDK, something about the way he talks about this guy just feels...like more than that.

For the record, I don't see slash everywhere. I've got my slash goggles for fiction, like a million other fannish folks, but I've never been someone to convince myself The Slash Is Real when it's not.

I don't know how - just in principle - you distinguish between those things from the outside, honestly.

What, the difference between "seems like bromance" and "seems like romance"?

Hmm. The sound of a person's voice when they talk about someone they're into tends to be different than when they talk about other people. They kind of tense up internally so their pitch often changes a tiny bit. And the rhythm of their speech sometimes changes.

Also, you can sometimes hear forced casualness in a person's voice when they bring up someone they're very into. It's like, they really want to talk about this person but at the same time they don't want to sound like they want to talk about this person.

He also just heavily romanticizes this guy. Like, imagining that this guy would be the hero in a story and he himself would be the villain, but they'll be super close for a long time before the differences in their nature separate them. (He is not a bad person that I am aware of, for the record.)
