Thank you. I dislike Disney movies and neither of my sons has seen one, in part because of the issue you mentioned. I don't think that girls who watch Disney movies grow up to be passive or incapable solely based on the influence of those princesses. But it is one more link in a social chain that shows women as needing the aid and affection of a stronger, more capable male. There's enough of that attitude in the real world without my boys seeing it in their entertainment.

Plus? I dislike how they've "Disney-fied" the fairy tales and given them all happy endings. Doesn't anyone else remember that in the original Hans Christian Andersson version, the Little Mermaid dies?

But... what about stuff like 'The Jungle Book', 'The Rescuers Down Under' 'Dumbo', 'Fantasia' (the original one), and the 'Sword and the Stone'? :/

I've that version of the Little Mermaid on VHS.

[identity profile] sevendeadlyfun.livejournal.com 2008-06-25 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
No. Very seriously, there is absolutely no Disney in our house. Not the classics, not the Playhouse TV version. We're just not Disney compatible, for tons of tl;dr reasons.

But you'll let your kids watch The Emperor's New Groove at least, right?

Re: 144

[identity profile] sevendeadlyfun.livejournal.com 2008-06-25 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, no. We're not really a "New Groove" bunch.

A few questions from a curious animation student - have you seen any Disney movies before? If your sons wanted to see one, would you let them? And finally, do you have this same attitude towards movies Pixar and Dreamworks releases?

Re: 144

[identity profile] sevendeadlyfun.livejournal.com 2008-06-25 01:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I have seen many Disney movies over the years. My favorite character growing up was Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty. And no, I would not let them watch a Disney movie even if they wanted to. Just wanting to isn't a good enough reason for me.

Pixar and Dreamworks? I'm not exactly well-versed in which is which but I have a general awareness of the types of movies they release (Toy Story, Ratatouille, etc) and no, we don't watch those either. I will say that for those movies it isn't any moral or ethical issue, but simply that I (and my husband) don't enjoy them. Since our children watching them requires us to watch them, the kids don't watch them either.

I'm sorry, but you sound like a complete looney.

Re: 144

[identity profile] sevendeadlyfun.livejournal.com 2008-06-25 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh noes! Some anonymous person on the internet doesn't approve of my stance on Disney cartoons! Whatever shall I do?

Re: 144 (different anon

(Anonymous) 2008-06-25 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I watched horror movies and Disney as a kid.

Re: 144 (different anon

(Anonymous) 2008-06-25 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
o_O It cut me off. Seriously, people think kids are idiots. Yah, I watched horror growing up. And Disney.

You just seem mind numblingly up tight....about children's cartoons.

Re: 144

[identity profile] sexpress.livejournal.com 2008-06-25 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Your children wanting to watch them hardly means that you'll be forced to watch them, too. Why not at a friend's house? Do you find it harmful if you ever let them watch a G-rated animated movie?

Re: 144

(Anonymous) 2008-06-25 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
It might have *gasp* HARMFUL MESSAGES! And then you'd have to actually TEACH a kid that these things aren't real and aren't always okay! Why do that when you can sanitize everything and make sure the only entertainment that's allowed is being preached to all the time?

Re: 144

[identity profile] sevendeadlyfun.livejournal.com 2008-06-25 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. You've figured me out. I refuse to let my children watch movies I consider sexist because I don't want to actually teach them anything. And I'd have gotten away with it, too if it weren't for you pesky anonymous commenters!

Re: 144

(Anonymous) 2008-06-25 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Man on man porn = not sexist and offensive to gay men
Disney Movies = sexist evil

This, all coming from someone with sevendeadlyfun in their name = priceless

Re: 144

[identity profile] sevendeadlyfun.livejournal.com 2008-06-25 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh goodie. The ad hominem attacks portion of the argument. Well, seeing as you're anonymous, I'll have to skip the rational, reasoned parts of my usual reply and go for the big finish:

My children don't watch Disney. I'm not sure why this bothers you. I don't care. Have your own children and watch Disney all day, every day with them. Enjoy it, revel in it, do a Disney song and dance based on your movie watching. I will still have a Disney-free house.

Re: 144

[identity profile] sevendeadlyfun.livejournal.com 2008-06-25 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
First, are you actually advocating that I not supervise my children? That I send them to someone else and let that hypothetical someone else choose what they watch and monitor them while they watch it? Seriously?

Second, where is your dog in this fight? I don't let my children watch animated movies, particularly Disney movies. I didn't say ban Disney, it's the omg ebul! So I'm not real sure where your vehement reaction stems from. You like Disney? Enjoy your Disney.

Re: 144

[identity profile] sexpress.livejournal.com 2008-06-26 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not doing any of that; I'm simply asking these questions out of curiosity. I'm planning on going into animation as a career and want to know more about why people do and don't like it in general. So please, there is no need for that tone.

Re: 144

[identity profile] sevendeadlyfun.livejournal.com 2008-06-25 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. Exactly. Incredibly srs bzness. Plus? Gotta respect a captain in a hat. :)

Re: 144

(Anonymous) 2008-06-25 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
But seriously....I think you take it way too seriously as well. :P But whatever.

Re: 144

[identity profile] sevendeadlyfun.livejournal.com 2008-06-25 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I suppose it does seem serious business. I'm not feeling all indignant or righteous, but than again this is the internet. Indignant is practically the default setting. So, yeah, I see your point. I'm very srs bzness today. :o

I'll work towards whimsical and maybe by Friday, I'll manage a cavort or two.

Re: 144

This is the 144 OP. LMAO @ all the people SHOCKED that you don't let your kids watch Disney, then throwing your penchant for slash in your face. Disney's such a cult, and the anons and replies to my f!s have made it quite obvious.
