Re: If you could change one social norm, what would it be?

"Oh, you look so much prettier with make up! You should wear it more often. N-not that you don't look pretty without it of course, but the extra color is good on you! Gives you a youthful glow."

"You should wear make up more often. Take a little pride in yourself. Don't you want people to think you look nice?"

"You'll never get promoted unless you play the game. Get a nice skirt, put on some make up. That's what they want to see -
someone professional."

And yet at the same time you get:

"OMG make-up is cheating, how can you know what a girl really looks like if she wears make-up all the time?!"

"You should wear LESS make-up, you're pretty enough without it/being more natural is much better/make-up is so fake/It's sooo bad for your skin!"

I mean... this is true for some people. Have you seen those videos where they go from no make up to full make up and it's literally like a different person?

I agree that people should like someone for how they look, but I also think there's nothing wrong with being shocked/surprised when the person you go home with looks nothing like the person you wake up with.

Oh it's absolutely true. It's just that for every person pushing a woman to use more make-up, there is at least one person critical of women using make-up. It's not nearly as much of a "pressure to wear make-up all the time" thing as it's portrayed in this thread.

True. I think that the rule for everything else should apply to make up too. Is it affecting you? No? Then STFU, your opinion is unneeded and most likely unwanted.

NAYRT

When people (especially men) say these things, they're not trying to pressure you to not wear makeup at all--and they usually respond with shock and disgust if you respond to them by going without any makeup. When men say they like women who don't wear makeup, they mean they like "no makeup" makeup looks. They never point out an average woman who isn't wearing any makeup to illustrate their point, and in fact often mock such women for being "ugly".

Different anon—and sometimes it's not even that men who say this shit like women who wear “natural looking” makeup, they want women who look like airbrushed, photoshopped supermodels without wearing any makeup, which, well, you can’t photoshop your actual face, only pictures.

The first sentence comes from guys the most. The examples in the second? Come mostly from other women.

This contradicts nothing in my comment.
