Re: If you could change one social norm, what would it be?

You can pry my lipstick from my dead, cold hands.

That "unfair pressure" nonsense sounds like a personal problem.

+1 to your first sentence, I freaking love makeup and whenever anyone says "oh but it's so bad for your skiiiin" or get judgmental about it I just want to put more on. :| I don't because caking it on looks awful but the thought is there lmao.

"Oh, you look so much prettier with make up! You should wear it more often. N-not that you don't look pretty without it of course, but the extra color is good on you! Gives you a youthful glow."

"You should wear make up more often. Take a little pride in yourself. Don't you want people to think you look nice?"

"You'll never get promoted unless you play the game. Get a nice skirt, put on some make up. That's what they want to see -
someone professional."

And yet at the same time you get:

"OMG make-up is cheating, how can you know what a girl really looks like if she wears make-up all the time?!"

"You should wear LESS make-up, you're pretty enough without it/being more natural is much better/make-up is so fake/It's sooo bad for your skin!"

I mean... this is true for some people. Have you seen those videos where they go from no make up to full make up and it's literally like a different person?

I agree that people should like someone for how they look, but I also think there's nothing wrong with being shocked/surprised when the person you go home with looks nothing like the person you wake up with.

Oh it's absolutely true. It's just that for every person pushing a woman to use more make-up, there is at least one person critical of women using make-up. It's not nearly as much of a "pressure to wear make-up all the time" thing as it's portrayed in this thread.

True. I think that the rule for everything else should apply to make up too. Is it affecting you? No? Then STFU, your opinion is unneeded and most likely unwanted.

NAYRT

When people (especially men) say these things, they're not trying to pressure you to not wear makeup at all--and they usually respond with shock and disgust if you respond to them by going without any makeup. When men say they like women who don't wear makeup, they mean they like "no makeup" makeup looks. They never point out an average woman who isn't wearing any makeup to illustrate their point, and in fact often mock such women for being "ugly".

Different anon—and sometimes it's not even that men who say this shit like women who wear “natural looking” makeup, they want women who look like airbrushed, photoshopped supermodels without wearing any makeup, which, well, you can’t photoshop your actual face, only pictures.

The first sentence comes from guys the most. The examples in the second? Come mostly from other women.

This contradicts nothing in my comment.

I didn't need pry stuff from you. You bought them. Beside, makeup is a mere gesture....on my point view.

Correct me if i wrong....

I don't wear makeup (never have) and honestly I agree with you. I've never felt any sort of pressure to wear it beyond the occasional comment that it would probably look good on me, and I certainly haven't had any shortage of guys hitting on me despite my lack of makeup.

I think it depends on where a person lives and works, to some extent.

I haven't had pressure to wear it myself, but I know other women who say it's expected where they work.

Re: If you could change one social norm, what would it be?

I love makeup. I mean, I just spent a stupid amount of money at the Sephora sale and I'm not even ashamed, I fricken LOVE makeup.

But I do think there's unfair pressure on women to wear makeup. Whether it's workplace expectations, or semi-formal occasion expectations, or just the simple fact that you'll almost never see a woman in an ad or magazine or show or movie without obvious signs that she's wearing makeup. The societal message is clear: unless you look like this naturally (which you don't) you would do best to seek the help of makeup.

You know, I do wear makeup sometimes because I want to, but I still don't get why so many people who like wearing it get so defensive when someone says it shouldn't be expected.

No one is trying to take your lipstick away, JFC. They're just saying women shouldn't be expected to wear it.
