Women wearing makeup. Fuck you, makeup. I boggle that there are people who, even if they're just wearing sweats or something equally sloppy, won't show their face in public without at least mascara or lipstick. That's fucked up. That's some unfair pressure.

That boggles me too. I put make up on for weddings. Maybe for concerts if I want to look a little extra cute because the concerts I always go to I am like... 10 feet max from the artist and I can make eyes at them. >__>

I prefer sleep over looking pretty, tbh. Since I'm not like... terribly ugly at base level.

I’m a freakin’ fat sour-faced little goblin at base level, and I still think the expectation that I have to wear makeup if I’m in public can fuck the hell off.

Who is making this expectation? I mean, I know that some people were raised by moms that thought you had to 'put on a pretty face' for the world, but wasn't that the generation before ours?

For a lot of us, the generation before ours is our boss's. There are expectations, especially if you work in an office setting in a good-ol'-boy profession. Worked for a marketing and advertising place... you could dress and do whatever the heck you wanted! Show those customers how creative even the accountant is! Moved to an orthopaedist and it's skirts, heels, make-up, etc, etc... Orthopaedics is very male dominated, and it shows.

I have a job where I am expected to put on makeup before I come to work. In my case it's kiiiind of understandable, because I work background for films. But I still resent the hell out of it, because it's not like I'm paid for the makeup I use, or the time and skill it takes to apply it. Plus, none of the male BG ever have to do any makeup whatsoever; that's the part that really makes me ragey.

Re: If you could change one social norm, what would it be?

(Anonymous) 2017-11-11 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I like makeup, but I don't wear it often because it wouldn't be practical at work and I'm too much of a lazy ass to put it on during the weekend unless I'm going out. Plus, I sweat like a hog and I'm worried about it smearing. My sister loves makeup. She gets up an hour before me to do her face and hair because she finds the whole ritual calming. She wouldn't wear makeup and sweats together though.

I don't wear makeup for a couple of reasons. I think overall my skin is better because I don't, tbh. Not perfect, but perfectly OK skin. I sometimes wonder if people who talk about how horrible their skin is without makeup wouldn't find MASSIVE improvements if they gave up makeup for a time and tried letting their pores breathe, not slathering chemicals on their faces, etc. There are some big problems with makeup. It's not particularly regulated for safety, tbh. Some people start wearing it very young because it's cool and interesting...putting tons of stuff on their faces and having skin issues but not connecting the two at any point. I'm not saying it's always the case, but there is absolutely nothing healthy about makeup. Nothing positive for your skin.

You can pry my lipstick from my dead, cold hands.

That "unfair pressure" nonsense sounds like a personal problem.

+1 to your first sentence, I freaking love makeup and whenever anyone says "oh but it's so bad for your skiiiin" or get judgmental about it I just want to put more on. :| I don't because caking it on looks awful but the thought is there lmao.

"Oh, you look so much prettier with make up! You should wear it more often. N-not that you don't look pretty without it of course, but the extra color is good on you! Gives you a youthful glow."

"You should wear make up more often. Take a little pride in yourself. Don't you want people to think you look nice?"

"You'll never get promoted unless you play the game. Get a nice skirt, put on some make up. That's what they want to see -
someone professional."

And yet at the same time you get:

"OMG make-up is cheating, how can you know what a girl really looks like if she wears make-up all the time?!"

"You should wear LESS make-up, you're pretty enough without it/being more natural is much better/make-up is so fake/It's sooo bad for your skin!"

"OMG make-up is cheating, how can you know what a girl really looks like if she wears make-up all the time?!"

I mean... this is true for some people. Have you seen those videos where they go from no make up to full make up and it's literally like a different person?

I agree that people should like someone for how they look, but I also think there's nothing wrong with being shocked/surprised when the person you go home with looks nothing like the person you wake up with.

NAYRT

When people (especially men) say these things, they're not trying to pressure you to not wear makeup at all--and they usually respond with shock and disgust if you respond to them by going without any makeup. When men say they like women who don't wear makeup, they mean they like "no makeup" makeup looks. They never point out an average woman who isn't wearing any makeup to illustrate their point, and in fact often mock such women for being "ugly".

I didn't need pry stuff from you. You bought them. Beside, makeup is a mere gesture....on my point view.

Correct me if i wrong....

Re: If you could change one social norm, what would it be?

I don't wear makeup (never have) and honestly I agree with you. I've never felt any sort of pressure to wear it beyond the occasional comment that it would probably look good on me, and I certainly haven't had any shortage of guys hitting on me despite my lack of makeup.

Re: If you could change one social norm, what would it be?

(Anonymous) 2017-11-13 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
I think it depends on where a person lives and works, to some extent.

I haven't had pressure to wear it myself, but I know other women who say it's expected where they work.

Re: If you could change one social norm, what would it be?

(Anonymous) 2017-11-12 07:41 am (UTC)(link)
I love makeup. I mean, I just spent a stupid amount of money at the Sephora sale and I'm not even ashamed, I fricken LOVE makeup.

But I do think there's unfair pressure on women to wear makeup. Whether it's workplace expectations, or semi-formal occasion expectations, or just the simple fact that you'll almost never see a woman in an ad or magazine or show or movie without obvious signs that she's wearing makeup. The societal message is clear: unless you look like this naturally (which you don't) you would do best to seek the help of makeup.

You know, I do wear makeup sometimes because I want to, but I still don't get why so many people who like wearing it get so defensive when someone says it shouldn't be expected.

No one is trying to take your lipstick away, JFC. They're just saying women shouldn't be expected to wear it.

I don't wear makeup. Unless it's a very special occasion. *shrug*
