Re: What is never accurately portrayed in media? DEATH

Death and dying. Barring a sudden cardiac arrest, it is not close your eyes and flop your head to the side.

Whether it is sickness or a gunshot wound, death is a process, not an event. The body has to turn off all the lights before your brain shuts down for good.

Peoples' skin gets pale, gray or blue. There is gurgling noises as they breathe, called the death rattle, caused by secretions that are no longer being swallowed rattling in the airway. This doesn't bother the dying person.

The dying person is usually unconscious or semiconscious and will be unconscious by the end.

The last few minutes usually have movements of the mouth that look like a fish out of water.

There isn't always a dramatic gasp at the end. Most of the time, the person exhales and won't take the next breath. They're just gone.

People don't always wait for the last family member to get there. Make your peace while you can or you'll regret it forever.

As someone who used to work in care, I'm seconding this. Also when they sort of gently close the person's eyes/mouth after. Nope, I tried that the first time I witnessed it, doesn't work. :(
