HACKING.

Especially in 90's movies... I watched the last hour of Hackers (I think) and it was so funny how there were these 90's aesthetic GUIs when in reality it's coding something for weeks, hitting a button, and hoping you got in.

Hahah yep. The Hackers movie is impressively amazing bad hacking. But the vast majority (read: all?) of hacking portrayals in media is totally crap.

Crime shows and lawyer shows always take sides, so the legal system is rarely if ever portrayed accurately.

I can assure you, good madam, that the legal system is ALWAYS represented in fiction with great accuracy.

Psychology and psychiatric treatment.

It feels like we still get this Freudian crap rather than any actual cognitive-behavioral therapy.

I feel like CBT would be really boring to see on TV though

Pharmacies. Especially in shows about hospitals. Honestly, medications in general seem to be sort of, "Eh, well we don't really need to research this, it's fine..."

Phone calls. People rarely answer or end a phone normally.

Oh man, this is a huge pet peeve! In movies, people just... hang up. Like no good-byes, just abrupt hanging up. I find it so alarming. Even extending to real life exits/departures.

Then again I come from an area where good-byes are notorious for lasting like half an hour lol

Now you're making me think of front doors. Those are my two media pet peeves. No one ever seems to shut/lock their doors when they come in/go out, and no one ever like... ends a conversation like a normal human being on the phone. They just... hang up.

when people on TV call the cops the cops always pick up the phone immediately. Last time I had to call the cops about something I was on hold for ten minutes.

My kingdom for an accurate half-deaf character! (I've found a handful of attempts at partial deafness, but they've never rung true imo)

Re: What is never accurately portrayed in media? DEATH

(Anonymous) 2017-11-16 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Death and dying. Barring a sudden cardiac arrest, it is not close your eyes and flop your head to the side.

Whether it is sickness or a gunshot wound, death is a process, not an event. The body has to turn off all the lights before your brain shuts down for good.

Peoples' skin gets pale, gray or blue. There is gurgling noises as they breathe, called the death rattle, caused by secretions that are no longer being swallowed rattling in the airway. This doesn't bother the dying person.

The dying person is usually unconscious or semiconscious and will be unconscious by the end.

The last few minutes usually have movements of the mouth that look like a fish out of water.

There isn't always a dramatic gasp at the end. Most of the time, the person exhales and won't take the next breath. They're just gone.

People don't always wait for the last family member to get there. Make your peace while you can or you'll regret it forever.

CPR -- the person doesn't generally regain consciousness, for starters.

Also, getting shot with a blank fucking hurts.

CPR. Very gently rocking over the person, or worse, doing push-ups on their chest does not look like CPR.

Anything involving writers, scientific research, or any kind of intelectual work. Because those processes are usualy BORING to those not doing them, it's all "lightbulb moments" or sudden bursts of insane creativity. Which isn't to say there ISN'T that in real life, but real life also has other (and of course more boring to watch) ways to work.
