Re: What fandom opinions do you hold that will never change?
(Anonymous) 2017-11-22 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)I will always love BTVS, but they wasted so much potential for character growth and development right from the start.
Instead of making Willow slowly more self-aware about her own poor behaviour, the writers just let her remain stuck in a weird teenage mentality that her friends having other friends and relationships and a life in general was somehow a betrayal. Nobody else was supposed to be smart because Willow was the smart one and anyone questioning her was wrong.
I have plenty of blame for Giles not putting his foot down about her learning magic properly from the start, because hello. He definitely knows that shit is not to be messed with. You would think if she was really that smart she would have been more aware of that herself though and looked further into how to use magic responsibly and who to learn from.
I think it's funny that people get so angry about Dawn, the teenager who acts like a teenager, but not Willow and Xander, who were teenagers who acted like teenagers, and then became adults who still act like teenagers.
I have many thoughts and feelings sorry.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-22 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)And when she and Xander cheated, and Oz said 'i think you want to talk to me to make yourself feel better' - that was it. Right there. That was Willow top to bottom and it *never changed*.
I loved Dawn. I don't care. She *was* a teen: she was stupid and impulsive and thought she was invulnerable and in the end, she was so smart and capable and good, i just loved her. And Xander had his good moments, here and there, but my fic-Xander is nothing like his generally jerk-ass show-self. (Though I blame a lot of Xander on the fact that Whedon said he lost interest in the character and basically abandoned him about season five....)
Ah! "Brendon : That really is admirable. Because after about Season Five on [Buffy], or the end of Season Four, I was that guy. [Buffy creator] Joss [Whedon] actually said Xander was done"”that there was no more. I was just kind of relegated to the background. It was one of those things that, where I was at in my life, the money was more important than my pride or taking care of myself. [Leaving], especially as the show's just starting to take off...."

I tried very hard to be fair to Willow in my fics, but.... It was hard, and didn't always work.
