What place have you visited....

(Anonymous) 2017-11-28 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
that was completely disappointing?

Mount Rushmore. It's tiny and the whole visitors' center thing was heavily under construction at the time.

Puerto Vallarta. It's just not my scene, I guess.

I liked it but to each their own.

The Holocaust Museum. I think the main problem was that my sister and I were stuck in the middle of two school groups who did not give a shit. They also made us half an hour late for our time slot. And half the screens while walking through were not working.

Dubrovnik in Croatia. I was expecting more historical stuff. It was basically just shops.

I read that it was heavily bombed in the 90s and a lot of what you see is the rebuilt stuff. I don't know if you've ever been, but Paris is lovely and historical feeling if you avoid high tourist season. Very good place to just pick a neighborhood and wander.

The Big Pineapple is not that big on the inside.

I don't know why, I assumed you meant O'ahu. (Riffing on NYC as the Big Apple?)

I was stationed there for a couple years, and everybody's jealous but nope. Too humid in the summer (could not be outside without being covered in sweat), too touristy all year 'round.

Stonehenge, to some extent.

I somehow expected to have to go over some scary chasm or through a dark and forbidding forest, but no, it's just sitting out there in the middle of a big field, surrounded by cows and aprked cars.

And you can't even get close. Was very disappointing for me, too.

Versailles. It was so damn hot and there were zillions of people everywhere. I felt claustrophobic, which was weird since we were in a huge palace. The Hall of Mirrors was pretty damn sweet though.

New Orleans. Before I went, I'd heard for years that it was the GREATEST PLACE EVER, and I was super excited to go. It was a cool place, and I want to eventually go back someday, but...it's not the MOST AWESOME PLACE OF ALL TIME like I kept hearing.

I loved it but I went to the right restaurants and music venues because I went there with people who knew their way around.

I like New Orleans, but it's definitely not the greatest place ever. The food's amazing, the French Quarter is fun to walk around but 1) definitely not in summer or at Mardi Gras and 2) it's a short vacation IMO because you can see/do most things in 3-4 days tops.

I went to Jamestown in 8th grade on a field trip. I wouldn't say it was disappointing, but I think it would have been better if I hadn't hurt my leg dashing to the bus that morning and ended up limping everywhere on that trip.

I am ashamed to admit that for years I thought Jamestown was just the glass blowing hut area. I didn't know there was the fort and ship too. Whenever my family would visit my great-aunt in Norfolk, we'd just go to the Jamestown glass hut because it didn't cost anything to visit.

I'm not going to describe it as disappointing, but me and the partner went to London for the week to see Fleetwood Mac and I was kind of depressed by how unsuited I was to the place. I have pretty bad anxiety and the crowds/cramped tube journeys made me want to cry. I just felt completely lost (and was in the literal sense a few times) and aside from the concert itself, I couldn't wait to be home again. :( I'll just never be a city girl I guess. I admire people who can thrive in that sort of busy environment.

I don't have any interesting stories about that but my ex-husband had a bunch. One I remember is that his family went to see a mural at a pork processing plant (Farmer John possibly) without seeing an actual picture first and it was this big mural of a bunch of pigs going into the factory and coming out as angel pigs and ascending into heaven.

That's actually what I kind of would expect to see but they were apparently expecting something a little classier.

Jockeys Ridge, the largest natural sand dune on the USA east coast.

I started walking up the dune, got 1/4 of the way to the top, got tired of sinking into the sand, and went back to the gift shop area.

We went to Greece for a school trip. The whole thing was pretty terrible.
Extremely dirty accomodations, massive smog in Athens, it was shortly before the Olympic games and everything was a giant building site, our teachers were the ones who didn't want to see any sights and just wanted to lie by a poolside sipping Ouzo, the places we saw were immensely crowded and not very well maintained, (And it didn't help that we had to sleep out on deck on the ferry we were stuck on for 20 hours while our teachers were cozy in a cabin, our bus got broken into on the second night and I badly sprained my ankle/probably tore a ligament on the first day but the teachers didn't give a rat's ass about that.)

I've been a few times and Washington DC just doesn't do it for me. Traffic is terrible and the monuments aren't very interesting. Seriously, you go and look and... that's it, there's nothing else to do. The museums are cool but the crowds make it an absolute nightmare.
