You're doing the good thing, OP, tossing out little encouragements and such, but honestly, it's possible that since Jan 2017 the escapism of reading and writing fanfic seems much too painfully head in the sand to a lot of people.
If we survive until 2020 I expect a resurgence.

OH, please.

*shrug* You don't feel this way? idgaf. I'm a writer, and I do.

Nope, I don't. I think it's ridiculous and self-defeating.
And idgaf that you do, 'cause i don't.
*shrug*

Not ayrt, and I don't feel the way they do, but your responses have been needlessly hostile and a bit rude.

Just replying in kind.

Not OP, but, man, I've been looking for MORE ways to escape since then. I have severe anxiety and ptsd (from a natural disaster that repeated itself this year many times over) and my reading in general has gone through the roof (as well as anything that will force me to forget for a bit-social activities, extreme yoga sessions, painting, hiking in no service areas, rock climbing, swimming by myself in really dangerous waters... Basically I'm at the point of doing extreme escapism or extremely dangerous things to numb myself, so if these unfinished fics could finish, maybe I won't die in the desert or something.

oh, PLEASE

(Anonymous) 2017-12-01 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
Fuck you, little bitch. Oh, please, what? You're a fucking piece of shit.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-01 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Well Trump's going to kill us all anyway, so there's really no use in reading anything if nothing's ever ever going to get finished.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-01 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
Look, he's an orange disaster on two legs, but this country has survived incredibly bad presidents before. His presidency will continue to suck all kinds of balls, but it's not the Armageddon.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-01 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd argue that reading and writing fanfic as a form of escapism is the opposite to a lot of people. Head in the sand? Newsflash, OP, you can write and read fanfic and still be aware of current events.

In fact, in the world of Donald Trump, Brexit, terrible mass shootings in the USA, terrorism and so on people need a little 'escape', you know? We can't spend 24/7 on what's happening in the world and around us or we'd all go crazy. It's healthy to have an outlet out. For fanfic writers, that's the outlet.

Visible bookmarks on WIPs might help encourage authors. But TBH I'm glad for the subscription feature because I can basically forget about all of the fics that aren't getting updated...and just think damn, I must have subscribed to a dozen fics this last month and only ever saw one of them updated.

I used to do this but then I'd forget to check them and so now I subscribe and if they haven't updated in a while I'll say something to nudge them along.

Also, authors can see how many bookmarks total, including private, if they look at their stats. :)

It's awesome you leave comments. As an author, trust me - every single one is treasured.

I would totally to forget to check, though - i did some 'read later' marking and then totally forgot about *that* for weeks.

I find it easier to subscribe, that way i'll get an update automatically, and if i forget, it doesn't matter.

Thanks for being awesome!

I saw an author and a commenter get into an internet slapfight over an update schedule-- commenter asked what the update schedule would be like, author fired back a multi-paragraph rant about how they were publishing this stuff for free and readers should be happy they're getting anything at all, to which the commenter replied that they were diagnosed with some form of cancer and given X months to live, and just wanted to know how likely the story was to be finished/readable in that timeframe.

Weirdest comment-fight I've seen in my whole goddamned life.

"diagnosed with some form of cancer and given X months to live, and just wanted to know how likely the story was to be finished/readable in that timeframe."

yeah, right. What utter manipulative bullshit.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-01 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
Huh, I always assumed private bookmarks were from the fans who were afraid to have my problematic crap on their pure account page.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-01 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
That's probably true for some. I just Private things I want to read but didn't get to yet, since a 'public' bookmark is like an endorsement. If I like it after I read it, I'll give it a review and/or kudo; if I REALLY like it, I'll make it a "Rec" bookmark.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-01 03:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I know that feeling. Always seems like the moment that I bookmark a WIP is the moment that it dies.
