Is this...a thing people do? Only watch shows when they want to fuck the main character? For real?

(Anonymous) 2017-12-13 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Or maybe... this is just a Doctor Who thing for OP? And they don't feel that way about every show they watch?

(Anonymous) 2017-12-13 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
But Doctor Who seems like a completely ridiculous choice of a show to watch just for main character hotness

surely there's better alternatives out there than a massively overinvolved, ridiculous time travel magic show (and i say that as a fan of the show)

The Doctor is a powerful and enigmatic figure. Makes perfect sense to me that a fan would want to be erotically attracted to him/her.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-13 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I've never met someone who solely watches shows because they think the main character is hot, but I've met people who won't watch shows because they think the main is ugly.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-13 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
... Why is that difficult for you to comprehend? It's often easier to be more invested in a lead you are romantically interested in (whether you imagine yourself with that character, or wank to the idea of that character with another character). Sometimes, the plot isn't enough to sell it to you, but the characters can.

ayrt

...or you can just...relate to the character? Or like the character /without/ wanting to fuck them? I've literally never been invested in a show by virtue of fuckability alone.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-13 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
Why do you get to tell people why they are allowed or not allowed to enjoy something? I absolutely do not relate to every protagonist I like, regardless of whether or not I want to fuck them. Nor do I particularly think I need to. It is perfectly okay to be attracted to characters. I mean good for you, I guess, for being too self-important to not enjoy something for aesthetic or romantic reasons, but your reasons aren't any more important than OP's. People don't need to write a thesis on why they do, or don't, enjoy something they watch for fun.

I mean, I’m boggled too, but at least they’re being (anonymously) honest? I dunno, my two longest standing fandoms do involve male characters I ship and am attracted to, but I can’t imagine only consuming media based on the attractiveness of the characters. I didn’t even find those aforementioned male characters that I ship attractive when I first saw their respective shows.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-13 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Neither the OP nor anyone in this thread has said they ONLY consume media based on that.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-13 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
It's important enough to OP, at least in the specific context of Doctor Who, that it can single-handedly change whether or not they watch the show. I don't think it's at all a stretch to say that OP is consuming Doctor Who based only on the attractiveness of the Doctor.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-13 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
It's a stretch to say OP ONLY EVER consumes ANY MEDIA for that reason.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-13 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
I think we're mostly just arguing over the interpretation of anon's original comment at this point, because that's not how I read their comment.

I think it's because "media" is a tricky, silly word that can be singular or plural.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-13 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
"Only watch shows when they want to fuck the main character?"

Yeah, sure, OK.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-13 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT—I’d be really weirded out if OP, or any one person, chose to watch or read or play only media where they were attracted to a character in it. I’m puzzled that they’d even do that for one show. There are actors I think are attractive in certain roles that I can’t watch because the show or movie as a whole is terrible, and I can’t imagine ever deciding not to watch anything only because I wasn’t attracted to a character. That’s not my primary motivation for consuming media unless it’s erotica or porn.

I've started watching shows because I think the main character is hot. Hell, the only reason I watch Shadowhunters is because canon gay couple is hot as hell and fandom.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-13 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
How do you think Supernatural has lasted so long?

(Anonymous) 2017-12-13 07:30 am (UTC)(link)
Is this...a thing people do? Only watch shows when they want to fuck the main character? For real?

Yeah it's baffling to me too. I mean, sure, I like it when the characters I love are attractive. But my OTP for the last six years has been a pairing in which I personally find neither of the characters attractive, or even all that good looking.
