Honestly, yeah.

I mean, if you have a habit of never, ever liking any black characters in fiction, that's pretty racist and you probably need to examine that. If you feel an obligation to love all black characters, no matter what, simply because they're black... That's a lot less negative, but it's not much better, either.

I am not op, but I don't think they need to examine very hard to figure out why they feel like this. It's almost certainly because of people who accuse everyone of racism if they don't have an equal number of favorite characters who are black and who are white. Especially if op is in a big slash fandom and gets to hear about how people whose fave ships involve white dudes are extra racist for "being all about the whitecock" and considering black characters "unworthy" of slashing. Those people are all over the place. I've seen a few of 'em around here at times too.

Okay, but if you're fully aware that it's not about race for you because there are many black characters/ships you genuinely do like, and you have rational reasons for disliking them in the first place, it shouldn't actually bother you at all.

For example: After I watched Jessica Jones, someone got on my case for disliking Jessica/Luke, so I, y'know, simply explained why I disliked it, and... they understood me. They moved on. It wasn't a big deal.

cool but not everyone is in fandom for the purpose of obsessively dissecting their attitudes towards the sexualization/desexualization of various minority groups. Some people are just there for the shallow reasons of imagining hot people fucking, or naked, or whatever, without tons of meta. Sure, it's good to analyze our reactions and check our potential biases, but maybe some people don't want to think that hard about their porn, specifically, fanmade or not. But they still get to hear everyone throw fits about how racist they must be for not shipping X character enough, and tbh I've seen enough people insist that there's literally NO reason you wouldn't have an equal number of black faves/ships as white EXCEPT that you're a gross racist to see where someone might feel guilty about it even if they know intellectually that there's no damn race issues involved with their preferences.

So why exactly are you letting those people impact your enjoyment, then? If they're being irrational, and won't listen to reason, then just block them. They're especially not worth changing your entire perspective to the point where you feel guilty over not liking one black character.

Most people don't live in a bubble where the opinions of others matters exactly zero to them in every single situation. People protest racial inequality exactly because they want to make people think about it, and that's what's happening with OP. Just because they feel a bit guilty doesn't mean they're some stupid moron who lets every irrational insane person color their worldview.

Racial equality is obviously worth fighting for, but "thinking about it" absolutely does not entail an obligation to love every PoC in every fictional story in existence, and to dislike a single one equals complete and total failure. sorry ur racist now i dont make the rules!!!

Thinking that's true is being irrational.

Wanting proper representation means that PoC characters get just as many varying personality traits as white characters, even the unlikable ones. Saying, "I hate these kinds of characters, except when they're black" is performative at best, and condescending at worst.

I think OP realizes they don't have that obligation and that you're being pretty hyperbolic about their post, and just plain missing the point in your last sentence on the subject.

I agree with this - it should be fine to hate a PoC character for the personality they have, and not about their skin.

Let me give an example - Vivienne de Fer of Dragon Age: Inquisition. I hate her, but it is nothing to do with her being brown-skinned and everything to do with her political beliefs i.e. that the Circle system should be reinstated. I also respect her as a character because she is a very strong character. None of the reasons that I both hate her and respect her is because of her skin.

People can hate a PoC character for reason unrelated to their skin.

And if you're going to have a diverse cast, you might as well cast all the archetypes and roles. See Zeke and Doug Judy on Brooklyn Nine-Nine as characters who are supposed to be annoying and unlikable.

It's the same with female characters, which would make more sense if the representation was evenly spread; but considering a ton of properties are written by white dudes to star white dudes with like, one female character and one male poc (both of which often are thinly sketched background to aforementioned white dudes); I think it's kinda backwards to rag on fans for often preferring *gasp* the white dudes. Not everyone wants to work to find the moments of resistance or whatever, they just wanna read fic.

I don't think being 'colorblind' is really possible, and in this day and age which race being talked about so much, it's easy to see why someone can feel guilty for not liking a POC actor whereas they may have never even thought about race in a pre-BLM world.
