[Louisa May Alcott, Little Men]

OP here

(Anonymous) 2017-12-16 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Just wanted to apologize for the sudden flood of Alcott secrets. I was rereading the series and had a whole bunch of outraged feelings and no one else to share them with, lol!

No need to apologize! I love these secrets.

Yeah, me too!

You sound like the goody goody tbh.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-16 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
lol, k.

No YOU!

(Anonymous) 2017-12-16 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, just a modern younger person reacting to the social mores of the early 1800s.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-16 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
The 1870s, technically.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-16 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
You're making a lot of assumptions. I'm not a young person and I find Alcott's work to have fairly outdated mores because, hello, I wasn't born in the mid to late 1800s. And even older people can look at older literary works and think, "Damn, that's some antiquated thinking..."

THIS.

I guess if Jo was strong, (and kind of tomboyish, IIRC), she'd be drawn to kids with similar personalities. Although of course one should try to be accepting of people who don't have the preferred traits.

Yes, I totally get that. But calling a young boy "weak" because he... likes music? Is sensitive and doesn't care for rough or athletic games? That's kind of shitty.

He's also kind of a pushover and super easily led. That's more "weak" than anything else about him. I remember liking him as a kid but also wishing he would grow a spine sometimes.

Even though LMA is all for women's rights, she's still very into stereotyping things by gender - lots of "manly courage" and "womanly sympathy" and stuff.

I'm always glad to see Alcott secrets.

Yes, Alcott was a radical for her time - she refused to marry, her ideal life was supporting her entire extended family by writing (which she did), and was an anti-slavery and women's suffrage activist from early childhood.

I mean Daisy is also criticized for being too prissy and wild child Nan is brought in to help toughen her up with her hoydenish ways. Nan is just the most excellent and I love her so much.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-16 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
But let's also remember that Daisy was supposed to have a moderating effect upon Nan in return! To be honest, Nan's probably my favorite character out of all of them. She discovers an early interest in medicine and goes out and becomes a doctor, no messing around with falling in love and suddenly realizing that oh, the passion she had since childhood isn't as important as being a wife and mother. Obviously there's nothing wrong with being a wife and mother, I just dislike how Alcott's books consistently characterize it as THE end-all of womanly achievements.

I hate how Jo became so anti-girls in her later years, especially considering how close she was to her own sisters.
