People would be a lot happier at Christmas if we didn't have a picture perfect, Rockefeller, commercially-driven version of it in our heads.

Like, there's a reason we have movies like It's a Wonderful Life, to which the moral is pretty much "your life sucks but look bud, your friends just raised money for you." I don't even really like that movie, but I acknowledge we have to be thankful for what's nice about the holiday.

This is gonna sound like crazy talk, I know, but you have control over how you view Christmas.

Re: Unpopular opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-12-23 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
It's really hard to totally wipe out deeply entrenched received cultural ideas.

Re: Unpopular opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-12-23 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Wasn't for me, so I'm gonna call that a personal problem.

Re: Unpopular opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-12-23 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you think that you're completely emancipated from all cultural ideas? Or just this specific one/

Re: Unpopular opinions

Dude, all I know is that I feel no compunction to cook fancy shit or put up a Christmas tree or buy gifts for anyone but close family, so I don't do any of that stuff. I'm not gonna act like some victim of cultural norms when I'm an individual with agency. Are there people out there who think less of me for not playing along with the picture-perfect bullshit? Probably, but I don't care. You have this power in you as well, if you want to claim it. Or you can keep feeling inferior and resentful and brainwashed. Your choice!

Even if you don't actually feel compelled to do it, it can still make you irrationally, emotionally goofy and down and disspirited.

I think that's all we're talking about here.

Re: Unpopular opinions

Can it? Does it? I have literally never experienced that. I actually always quite liked Scrooge's take on things-- "You keep Christmas in your own way, and let me keep it in mine."

Don't let people bum you out over not having a traditional Christmas, simple as that. It's a silly thing to get dispirited about.

Personally, I quite like Christmas, fancy tree and fancy presents and all. But I find your whole attitude here obtuse and insensitive. You're basically saying "If you don't bootstrap your way out of the cultural conditioning you've been inundated with, you're weak and you have only yourself to blame for feeling low," which is BS in my opinion.

I do agree that we all have to take some responsibility for our feelings, but it's really not half as simple as you're making it out to be - not for many people, anyway.

Re: Unpopular opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-12-24 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
That's moving the goalposts. I can agree it's difficult to see past deeply entrenched received cultural ideas but it's hardly impossible. Lots of people do it on a selective basis, and since you specifically addressed the issue of Christmas, it's a little disingenuous to behave as though not being brainwashed by this vision of Christmas as it should be is the same as being emancipated from every and all cultural/social expectations.

But I'll tell you this - the key to not being unhappy because you fall short of that picture perfect holiday is realizing that this is YOUR mindset that YOU can change, any time you want. But if you persist in the belief that this is something you have no control over, well...

the moral of IAWL for women is "No woman is a success unless she's got a husband." Fuck you, movie.

Re: Unpopular opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-12-23 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't like the movie much either and that part was really dumb, but it was a throwaway bit. You're making something about you when it isn't.

No. Violet was a woman who didn't need a husband.

Also, it was made in the 40s. Ever heard of historical context?

sure, but it just makes me very glad I wasn't born yet in the 40s.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-24 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Wait... Violet who needed to leave town and "start fresh" in New York where no one knew how much she slept around? Violet, who in the Pottersville version of life was arrested for being a drunk prostitute? That Violet?

I'm not sure that's making the point you want to make.

Re: Unpopular opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-12-24 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Didn't she change her mind about leaving town at the end and everyone was happy that she decided to stay?

Re: Unpopular opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-12-24 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
She changed her mind because George needed the money back, because Violet's the hooker with a heart of gold. No one in the crowd acknowledges her beyond George smiling at her, and she's never seen again.

I think people would be a lot happier if there wasn't all the Oct and Nov. whining about how awful it is that people celebrate too early, too early, don't celebrate yet, it's not Christmas.

Because of work, if I don't get any decorating done early Nov. it's not happening. But everyone's all whine whine whine.

Last year in late Oct I asked an employee if they had any black artificial Christmas trees and he laughed at me and teased me that he didn't know if he could sell me one before Nov. First of all, fuck you it's a black tree it's for a Halloween display. Second, fuck you with the judgemental bullshit I can buy a dang tree anytime I want.

"First of all, fuck you it's a black tree it's for a Halloween display. Second, fuck you with the judgemental bullshit I can buy a dang tree anytime I want."

This seems like a rather disproportionate response to customer service banter from an employee who likely had no desire whatsoever to offend you, but okay.

Did you ever get a tree for your Halloween display?

Re: Unpopular opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-12-24 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I ended up ordering one online. It didn't make it in time for that Halloween, but it looked cute as hell the next one.

*shrug* People are responsible for their own unrealistic expectations, I think. I don't have this imaginary Perfect Christmas in my head and never have.

I like Christmas, myself, but I don't disagree with you.
